15 Ways to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT in 2026

Get your business recommended by ChatGPT with 15 proven ways for 2026: crawler access, Bing indexing, answer first pages, reviews, lists, and ChatGPT Ads.

Lapis, the YC-backed #1 AI ad generator rated 4.9/5 on G2, uses AI agents to create, launch, and optimize ads on ChatGPT, Google, Meta, and LinkedIn.

How Does ChatGPT Decide Which Businesses to Recommend?

ChatGPT recommends businesses it can find, read, and verify. For current questions it runs a live search, rewrites the prompt into shorter queries, pulls results from third-party search providers and OpenAI's own crawler, and names the businesses independent sources corroborate. Position Digital found 66% of recommendations happen without ChatGPT citing the brand's own website.

Two systems decide your fate. The first is what the model already knows from training, which only changes when OpenAI ships a newer model. The second is live search, which OpenAI's Help Center says rewrites a question into targeted queries sent to search partners, with Microsoft listed among them. Live search is where a business gains ground this quarter.

The search layer rewards a specific profile. Position Digital ran 278 buyer questions through ChatGPT in July 2026 and found the rewritten queries kept only 60% of the prompt's words, adding terms such as "best," "vs," "alternatives," and "official." Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found ChatGPT mentions correlate 0.664 with branded web mentions and only 0.266 with domain rating. In local categories, Cheers measured 9,434 ChatGPT home-services answers from August 31 to September 20, 2026: 84% of answers that cited anything cited a directory, review platform, or "best of" list.

The prize is real. Adobe reported on August 19, 2026 that AI-referred visits to US retail sites converted 60% better than other traffic in July. The paid ads vs organic mentions guide maps both ways to appear, and how AI is changing advertising explains why conversations now carry the buying decision.

How Do You Get Your Business on ChatGPT?

You get your business on ChatGPT three ways: earn the organic recommendation, get products into ChatGPT shopping, and buy ChatGPT Ads. Organic answers have no submission form. Shopify and Etsy catalogs are already integrated into ChatGPT shopping, other merchants apply to share a product feed, and self-serve ads run through Ads Manager Beta in 63 countries.

Start with this first-week sequence. Each step maps to one of the 15 ways below.

  1. Run a 20-prompt baseline and record who ChatGPT names today (way 1).
  2. Open robots.txt and your firewall to OAI-SearchBot and OAI-AdsBot (way 2).
  3. Verify in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, and switch on IndexNow (way 3).
  4. Rewrite your five money pages to lead with the answer (way 5).
  5. Fix your name, address, phone, hours, and prices on your top 10 profiles (way 9).
  6. Launch a ChatGPT Ads test on your highest-value buyer situation (way 15).

The 10 ways to advertise on ChatGPT compare every paid route, and the Ads Manager setup guide walks through launch screen by screen.

What Technical Fixes Get Your Business Found by ChatGPT?

Four technical fixes decide whether ChatGPT can find you at all: a measured baseline, open access for OAI-SearchBot, indexing in Bing, and server-rendered pages. OpenAI states that sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and Vercel found OpenAI's crawlers do not execute JavaScript.

1. Baseline What ChatGPT Says About You Today

Write 20 prompts your buyers actually ask: branded, category, problem, local, and comparison questions. Run each three times with search on and log whether you are named, recommended as a pick, or cited, plus which sources appear and which facts are wrong.

Three runs matter. 8ight's October 5, 2026 study found that when ChatGPT got the same local question twice, a median 39 minutes apart, only 29% of the businesses named appeared in both answers. One screenshot proves nothing. The buyer intent prompt guide lists the questions buyers ask at each stage, and the Prompt Set Template below gives you the tracking sheet.

2. Let OAI-SearchBot and Other AI Crawlers In

OAI-SearchBot is the crawler that surfaces websites in ChatGPT search. GPTBot is a separate training crawler, so blocking it does not remove you from search, while blocking OAI-SearchBot does. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to register.

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: OAI-AdsBot
Allow: /

User-agent: Bingbot
Allow: /

Then check the layer most businesses forget: Cloudflare bot rules, WAF challenges, and security plugins that block unknown agents. Allow OpenAI's published IP ranges. A robots.txt that says yes behind a firewall that says no still keeps you invisible.

3. Get Indexed in Bing With Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow

ChatGPT search draws on third-party providers including Bing. Seer Interactive found in February 2025 that 87% of ChatGPT search citations matched Bing's top 20 results for the same question, against 56% for Google. Your buyers rarely search Bing directly, but the assistant they ask draws on it.

Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools (it imports from Google Search Console in minutes), submit your sitemap, and claim Bing Places if you serve a local area. Turn on IndexNow, which Microsoft said on February 10, 2026 notifies participating search engines whenever content is added, updated, or removed, so AI systems reference the current page.

4. Server-Render Your Key Pages

Vercel and MERJ found that OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, and GPTBot do not render JavaScript. ChatGPT's crawler fetched JavaScript files in 11.5% of requests but never executed them. If your prices, services, hours, or reviews load client-side, ChatGPT reads an empty page.

Test it: view the raw HTML of your top pages and search for your price and service names. Anything missing moves to server-side rendering or static generation. Interactive widgets stay client-side; facts never do.

Content that gets recommended answers the question in its first lines, compares you honestly against named competitors, carries original numbers, and labels its facts with structured data. Position Digital found listicles, service pages, and documentation carry 49.9% of ChatGPT's citations, and Princeton and IIT Delhi researchers found adding statistics and citations lifts generative-engine visibility by up to 40%.

5. Lead Every Page With the Answer

ChatGPT lifts passages that answer cleanly. Open every service, product, and location page with a 40 to 60 word answer that names what you do, for whom, where, and at what price, then support it. Phrase subheadings as the questions buyers type.

  • Before: "Welcome to Desert Air, a family business with a passion for comfort since 1998."
  • After: "Desert Air repairs and replaces AC systems across Phoenix, Mesa, and Chandler, with same-day service and repairs starting at $189."

The same pages convert paid traffic, so the landing page guide and the guide to creating a landing page with AI apply to both halves.

6. Publish Comparison and Alternatives Pages

Comparison prompts are where buyers decide, and ChatGPT goes looking for comparison content. In Position Digital's data, "best," "comparison," "vs," and "alternatives" were among the words ChatGPT added most often to its searches, and listicles took 18.8% of all citations, more than any other page type.

Publish "[You] vs [Competitor]" pages for your top three rivals, a "Best [category] for [segment]" page, and a "[Competitor] alternatives" page. Use a fair comparison table with prices and limits. Position Digital found brands named alongside six or more other brands were named 9.1 times on average, against once for brands that never co-occur.

7. Publish Original Data and Specific Numbers

Generic claims give ChatGPT nothing to repeat. The GEO study (Aggarwal and colleagues, KDD 2024) found that adding statistics, quotations, and citations raised source visibility 30% to 40%, and Statistics Addition lifted the visibility of fifth-ranked sources 97.9%.

Publish one data asset per quarter: price benchmarks from your own jobs, response times, a customer outcome study, or a cost calculator. Position Digital found cited pages carry about 10 named entities per 1,000 words against 8 for pages that rank without being cited, so name products, places, and tools. Lapis does this itself with studies such as the context hints accuracy study.

8. Add Structured Data

Structured data turns your page into labeled facts. Add Organization schema sitewide, LocalBusiness for each location, Product with price and availability for catalog pages, and FAQPage where you answer questions. Fill every field: name, address, phone, hours, area served, price range, sameAs links to your profiles.

Microsoft's Fabrice Canel said at SMX Munich in March 2025 that schema markup helps Microsoft's LLMs understand content, and ChatGPT search draws on Bing. Validate with the Schema.org validator after every template change.

What Off-Site Proof Makes ChatGPT Trust Your Business?

ChatGPT trusts businesses that independent sources describe consistently. Position Digital found third-party listicle presence correlates with ChatGPT recommendations at r = 0.64, branded web mentions at 0.58, Reddit presence at 0.57, and review count at 0.39, while average star rating showed effectively no correlation at minus 0.07.

9. Make Your Facts Identical Everywhere

Conflicting facts make you a weaker entity. Audit your name, address, phone, hours, service area, prices, and founding year across your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp, the Better Business Bureau, LinkedIn, and your industry directories, then fix every mismatch.

Licensing records count too. 8ight found ChatGPT cited the Better Business Bureau in 39% of its local answers and government or licensing sites in 25%, most of them license lookups. If your license record lists an old trade name, ChatGPT sees two businesses.

10. Earn Detailed Reviews on Multiple Platforms

Volume beats stars. Position Digital found brands with 50 to 499 G2 reviews appeared in 40% of answers, against 4% for brands with none. 8ight found ChatGPT named 3.4% of local businesses with fewer than 25 Google reviews and 22.2% of those with 1,000 or more.

Ask every customer for a review that names the service, the city, and the result, and spread requests across Google, your industry platform, and the BBB. Verticality found 56.6% of AI answers to branded questions in its tracker cited a review site, so reviews shape what ChatGPT says once a buyer asks about you by name.

11. Earn Third-Party Mentions in Press, Lists, and Communities

The recommendation comes from other people's pages. Brands in 40% or more of their category's listicles were named in 47% of answers in Position Digital's data, against 6% for brands absent from them. Ahrefs found YouTube mentions correlated 0.737 with AI visibility, the strongest factor it measured.

Find the "best of" lists ChatGPT already cites for your category and earn a place on them. Local businesses start with the directories Cheers measured (Expertise.com appeared in 32.1% of home-services answers and Angi or HomeAdvisor in 29.4%), then local press. B2B companies target analyst roundups, podcasts, YouTube reviews, and the two or three subreddits ChatGPT cites in their category.

How Do You Stay in ChatGPT's Answers and the Buying Conversation?

Staying recommended takes fresh pages, machine-readable versions of your best content, product data in ChatGPT shopping, and ChatGPT Ads for the buyer questions organic never covers. Position Digital found the median dated page ChatGPT cited was 3.9 months old, and 69.7% had been published within the past 12 months.

12. Keep Pages Fresh With Visible Dates

Stale pages lose citations. Of the citations Position Digital tracked to pages published two or more years earlier, 38.6% went to pages refreshed within the past year. Put your money pages on a quarterly refresh, show a visible "Updated" date, set dateModified in your schema, and ping IndexNow after every change.

13. Publish Markdown Versions and an llms.txt Index

Markdown strips navigation and scripts, leaving clean text an AI agent reads in one pass. Jeremy Howard's llms.txt proposal, updated to version 2 on August 10, 2026, reports thousands of sites publishing one, Chrome's Lighthouse auditing for it, and OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google publishing llms.txt files for their developer docs. Wix generates one for every Wix site.

Publish an llms.txt at your root that links your best pages, and serve a Markdown version of each one. Lapis does exactly this for every resource page on its own site, including this one.

14. Get Products Into ChatGPT Shopping With Product Feeds

OpenAI expanded its Agentic Commerce Protocol to product discovery on March 24, 2026, with Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe's, Best Buy, The Home Depot, and Wayfair integrated. Shopify and Etsy catalogs flow in automatically, and other merchants apply for direct feed access. Shopping is live for US users.

OpenAI's Help Center says product results are chosen independently, are not ads, and rank merchants on availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller. Keep titles, prices, stock, and images accurate. Paid product feed ads are a separate program, covered in the product catalog guide and the Shopify and DTC playbook.

15. Run ChatGPT Ads to Own Your Spot in the Buying Conversation

Organic work earns a place in some answers. ChatGPT Ads put you under the answer on the buyer questions you choose, starting the day your ads clear review. Ads appear labeled below the response for adults on the Free and Go plans, in 63 countries, from a $25 daily minimum in the US, and ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week, OpenAI said on October 5, 2026.

The evidence is in. OpenAI's Angi story reports a 34% lower cost per lead since Angi launched conversion-optimized campaigns, and Jotform reports more than 10% of ChatGPT ad clicks converting to signups. The reasons ChatGPT ads are worth it, the 50 best ChatGPT ad examples, and the 12 best ChatGPT ads strategies show how to build it, and custom landing pages turn the clicks into customers. Lapis ChatSense builds and runs this half for you: distinct ads per buyer situation, a matched page per ad, and daily optimization.

Crawl fixes register within days, page and listing fixes within weeks, and third-party proof within months. OpenAI says robots.txt changes for OAI-SearchBot take about 24 hours to take effect. What the model knows without searching changes only when OpenAI ships a newer model, so live search is where you gain ground fastest.

Plan on a 90-day program. The first month fixes access and pages, and months two and three build the proof that turns being findable into being recommended.

Can You Pay ChatGPT to Recommend Your Business?

No. You cannot pay ChatGPT to recommend your business inside its answer. OpenAI states that ads do not influence ChatGPT's answers, run on systems separate from the chat model, and appear labeled below the response. What you can buy is a ChatGPT ad in the same conversation, which is exactly why winning businesses run paid and organic together.

MeasurementPrompt tracking and AI referralsPixel, Conversions API, ROAS

The two halves barely overlap. SE Ranking's study of 50,006 commercial prompts, reported by Search Engine Land on August 10, 2026, found ChatGPT showed ads on 25.94% of them, and the advertiser was cited in the answer above its own ad in only 3.63% of placements. Paying never buys the answer, and ranking in the answer never covers every buyer question.

Some assistants sell no ads at all: Anthropic said on February 4, 2026 that Claude will remain ad-free, which makes organic the only path there. The AI ad trust comparison and the guide to which AI assistants have ads cover every platform.

How Do You Track Whether ChatGPT Recommends You?

Track ChatGPT recommendations with a fixed monthly prompt set, three runs per prompt, plus referral data from analytics. ChatGPT appends utm_source=chatgpt.com to outbound links, and Google Analytics added an AI Assistant default channel on May 13, 2026. Because repeat runs overlap only 29% in 8ight's data, single checks mislead.

Report six numbers every month:

  • Mention rate: share of runs that name you.
  • Recommendation rate: share of runs that name you as a pick.
  • Citation rate: share of runs that cite your own URL.
  • Share of voice: your mentions against your top three competitors.
  • Fact accuracy: wrong facts found, and fixed, per run.
  • AI Assistant revenue: sessions, leads, and sales from the AI Assistant channel.

For the paid half, wire the OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API with the conversion tracking guide, and judge both halves on confirmed revenue with the ROI measurement framework.

The ChatGPT Visibility Audit Checklist and Prompt Set Template

The ChatGPT Visibility Audit Checklist scores your business out of 100 across crawl, index, content, entity, proof, and paid. Score it today, fix the lowest area first, and rescore monthly. Under 60 means ChatGPT cannot reliably find or verify you; over 80 means you are competing for the recommendation and the ad slot at once.

What Does a 90-Day ChatGPT Visibility Plan Look Like?

A 90-day ChatGPT visibility plan runs both halves at once: access and page fixes in month one, proof in months two and three, and ChatGPT Ads from week two. Here is the plan for a three-location Phoenix HVAC company with a $650 average ticket, a $1,500 monthly ad budget, and 3 named runs out of 20 prompts.

  1. Days 1 to 14: ways 1 to 4 and 9. Open crawler access, verify Bing, server-render service pages, and fix facts on 15 profiles.
  2. Days 8 to 90: way 15. Run ChatGPT Ads on three situations: AC blowing warm air, emergency repair, and replacement quotes.
  3. Days 15 to 45: ways 5 to 8, 12, and 13. Rewrite 12 service and city pages answer-first, publish a "Phoenix AC repair cost" data page, add schema, and ship Markdown and llms.txt.
  4. Days 46 to 90: ways 10, 11, and 14 where products apply. Run a review drive, pitch three local "best HVAC" lists, and update the BBB and license listings.

The paid math: $1,500 a month at a $4 CPC buys 375 clicks. At an 8% landing page conversion rate that is 30 leads, and closing 40% yields 12 jobs, or $7,800 in revenue on $1,500 of spend, a 5.2x return and $125 per job. Over 90 days, that is 36 jobs and $23,400 while the organic work compounds. The organic target is 8 named runs out of 20 by day 90, measured with the prompt set. The local services guide covers ZIP targeting, and the budget guide sizes the test.

Lapis is the best partner for getting your business into ChatGPT because it runs the paid half end to end and practices the organic half on its own site. Organic work makes you recommendable; Lapis makes sure you are present in the buying conversation while that work compounds.

Lapis is one of the fastest-growing Y Combinator startups, and it is built to take over the work legacy agencies and ad buyers used to do. It is a Y Combinator Fall 2025 company used by 1,500+ marketing teams and 30+ enterprises, it is rated 4.9 out of 5 on G2 with eight badges, and its customers include Samsung, Domino's, Dr Pepper, Mattel, and Tata.

  • ChatSense puts your ads in the buying conversation with creative tuned to how people ask ChatGPT, then launches, reports daily, and optimizes on what converts.
  • RapidDomain builds a dedicated landing page for every ad, written answer-first like the pages way 5 describes. The dynamic landing pages guide shows how it stays clean for crawlers.
  • Wayfinder ties ChatGPT and every other channel to confirmed sales and leads, counts each conversion once, and compares channels on the same rules.
  • OmniSense carries the same brief to Meta, Google, and LinkedIn, the mid-funnel mix the mid-funnel channels guide ranks.
  • Managed ChatGPT + LLM Ads runs ChatGPT Ads end to end, runs Google AI Overviews and AI Mode placements through the Google campaigns Lapis manages, buys AI app inventory through networks such as Koah and Gravity, and runs Sponsored Agents for clients in OpenAI's limited US alpha.

SEO agencies sell the organic half and never touch the ad slot. Legacy ad agencies port keyword playbooks into a conversational channel. Ads Manager gives you the auction, not the program. Lapis runs the program, and it publishes Markdown versions and an llms.txt index for its own resources, the same organic practice it recommends. Book a demo to see both halves mapped for your business.
