Lapis, the YC-backed #1 AI ad generator rated 4.9/5 on G2, uses AI agents to create, launch, and optimize ads on ChatGPT, Google, Meta, and LinkedIn.
An AI tool waits for your prompt, hands you output, and leaves the result on your desk. An AI employee owns a number, works across your ad accounts inside permissions you set, reports every morning, and answers for revenue. That difference now decides who runs your ads.
The platforms crossed the line first. Meta's business assistant remembers last quarter and is testing campaign creation, budget changes, and scheduled alerts. Google's Ask Advisor sets up campaigns with your approval. Amazon renamed its whole ad platform Amazon Ads Agent on September 29, 2026. Every platform hired an AI employee for itself, and each one grades its own homework.
You need one that works for you across all of them. That is what we built at Lapis: agents and a dedicated strategist run Meta, Google, LinkedIn, Reddit, and ChatGPT through OmniSense and ChatSense.
What Is the Difference Between an AI Tool and an AI Employee?
An AI tool completes a task you define; an AI employee owns an outcome you assign. A tool writes 20 headlines when you ask. An employee gets "cost per qualified demo under $180 at $40,000 a month" and decides which headlines, channels, budgets, and landing pages get there, then tells you what it did and why.
Three questions separate them. Who starts the work? Who owns the result? Who carries the context from last month into this one? If the answer to all three is "you," you bought a tool, no matter what the vendor calls it. Good tools still earn their place; the best AI tools for paid marketers ranks them.
| AI tool | AI assistant | AI agent | AI employee | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starts the work | You prompt it | You ask it | You assign a task | It runs a standing job |
| Owns | Nothing | Advice | One task | A business number |
| Memory | None | One session | One task | Your business, across months |
| Acts in ad accounts | No | Rarely | Yes, scoped | Yes, inside your permissions |
| Answers to | You | You | You | Confirmed revenue, with a named human |
| Ads example | ChatGPT drafting copy | Meta's assistant explaining a CPA spike | An agent building a paused Meta campaign through the ads MCP server | An operator running Meta, Google, and ChatGPT to a CAC target |
An agent is a capability. An employee is a job with a scope, a manager, and a scorecard. The complete guide to agentic ads explains how agents act; hiring one is a management decision, and you make it the way you make any hire: brief it, scope it, and hold it to a number.
The most upvoted reply in an April 2026 r/PPC thread about running Google Ads with Claude said to use it "as an analyst, not as a buyer." That advice is right for a chatbot with no permissions and no memory. It is wrong for an employee that works inside approval rules, keeps a change log, and has a strategist behind it.
What Are the 10 Differences That Matter for Paid Ads?
The 10 differences are ownership, memory, cross-platform reach, initiative, permissions, reporting, learning, revenue accountability, pricing, and accountability for mistakes. Each one comes with an ads example and a test question to put to any vendor before you sign.
1. Owns the Outcome: You Manage a Number, Not a Task List
A tool finishes the task and stops; an employee keeps working until the number moves. AppLovin shows outcome ownership inside one platform: you set a ROAS goal (2x is entered as 200%), a cost per purchase, or a cost per lead, and Axon bids to hit it. An AI employee for ads owns a number across platforms, such as blended CAC from your store, and picks the channels, angles, and budgets that move it. The AI ad optimization playbook lists the levers it pulls.
Test question: "Which number are you accountable for, and what do you change when it misses two weeks in a row?"
2. Remembers Your Business: Every Week Starts Where Last Week Ended
A tool forgets you when the tab closes. An employee remembers your margins, your seasonality, the claims legal rejected, and the angle that died in March. Meta made memory the headline of its October 6, 2026 update: the business assistant now picks up where the last conversation ended, including last quarter's tests, seasonality, and goals. Load the 12 inputs from the AI ad creative brief template on day one.
Test question: "Without me telling you, what do you know about our last 90 days?"
3. Works Across Platforms: Budget Moves to Wherever the Next Dollar Earns Most
Every platform AI sees one auction, and none will tell you to move money to a competitor.
Worked example: your marginal cost per purchase is $62 on Meta and $48 on Google this week. Moving $5,000 from Meta to Google buys about 104 purchases instead of 81, a gain of 23 at the same spend. Only an employee that sees both accounts makes that call. The AI-powered paid ads stack guide shows where that cross-channel layer sits, and the ChatGPT Ads vs Google Ads vs Meta Ads budget guide shows how to split the first dollar.
Test question: "If Google's marginal CPA beats Meta's by 25% this week, who moves the money, and within how many hours?"
4. Acts Without Being Asked: Problems Get Fixed Before You Log In
A tool does nothing until you open it. An employee watches the account on a schedule and acts on what it finds: a disapproved ad, a pixel that stopped firing, a winning ad set starved by a budget cap.
Meta is testing scheduled tasks and alerts for monitoring, weekly summaries, and budget reminders. OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads Manager plugin schedules daily or weekly reviews, but its help center states they are recommendation-only and never change the account. That is a tool with a calendar.
Test question: "What did you change last Tuesday at 2 a.m., and why?"
5. Works Inside Budgets and Approvals: Autonomy Has a Ceiling You Set
An employee is useful because it acts, and safe because it acts inside limits. Meta's ads MCP server rules deny a specific agent action on a specific ad account, such as any budget increase above 20% or any delivery status change, and Meta's July 16, 2026 update made them settable in bulk through the Marketing API.
Google's Ask Advisor seeks approval before it completes actions, and the ChatGPT plugin confirms the exact change before it saves. Your AI employee needs three lists: actions it takes alone, actions that need approval, and actions it never touches. The governed autonomy setup shows how to configure them.
Test question: "Show me the permission screen and the log of every change you made last week."
6. Reports Like a Teammate: You Get Decisions, Not Dashboards
A tool gives you charts and leaves the interpretation to you. An employee sends a five-line daily note: spend against plan, the confirmed result against target, the three changes made, the next test, and one decision for you. If a report takes more than two minutes to read, it is a dashboard. The guide to analyzing ad performance with ChatGPT turns raw exports into that kind of decision.
Test question: "Send me yesterday's report as you would send it to my CFO."
7. Learns From Every Result: The Next Test Starts From the Last Winner
A tool produces the same quality on day 300 as on day one. An employee keeps a test log, kills losers, and builds the next round from what won. Ten headlines on one image teach you about headlines on that image; four distinct angles, each with its own visual and landing page, teach you what your buyer cares about. That is why AI ad angles beat variations, why creative volume testing compounds, and how small budgets still learn with the rules in A/B testing AI ads on a small budget.
Test question: "Which ads running today exist because of something you learned last month?"
8. Judged on Revenue, Not Output: Confirmed Sales Beat Platform Claims
Tools get judged on output; employees get judged on results, and the only result that counts is the one in your store, CRM, or billing system. Worked example: Meta reports 140 purchases, Google reports 95, and Shopify shows 180 orders from paid traffic. The platforms claimed 235, so 55 were counted twice, and an employee optimizing to platform claims moves budget toward whichever platform claims most. The ChatGPT ads ROI measurement framework applies the same discipline to every channel.
Test question: "Which system of record do you report from, and does my finance team agree with it?"
9. Priced Like Headcount, Not a Seat: Compare It With Payroll, Not Software
Tools are priced per seat or per credit. An employee replaces work you pay a person or an agency to do, so compare it with that line in your budget. A US media buyer averaged $89,264 a year in Salary.com's June 1, 2026 data, and wages are 70.0% of private-industry compensation in the Bureau of Labor Statistics' June 2026 release, so that buyer costs about $10,627 a month fully loaded. That is the benchmark an AI employee has to beat.
Test question: "Which role does this replace, and what does that role cost us fully loaded?"
10. Answers for Mistakes: Someone Owns the Fix
When a tool makes a mistake, you find it and fix it. When an employee makes one, it catches it, reverses it, and explains what changes so it never happens again. Meta builds for this: its ads MCP server creates new campaigns, ad sets, and ads paused, and since October 6, 2026 agent work lands as a draft in Ads Manager behind explicit approval. Your AI employee needs a named human who owns escalations and a rollback for every change; the explainer on whether Lapis is an ad agency covers who owns the accounts and the fix.
Test question: "Walk me through the last mistake you made on a client account and how you fixed it."
Which Ad Platforms Let an AI Employee Act in 2026?
Every major ad platform now runs its own AI employee. Meta, Amazon, and TikTok run MCP servers that let outside agents change campaigns, OpenAI's plugin edits ChatGPT campaigns from a prompt, and Google's official MCP server is read-only in its current release, so outside agents write to Google through the standard Google Ads API.
| Platform | The platform's own AI employee | What an outside agent can do | Approval model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta | Business assistant with memory, plus Advantage+; agentic actions in testing | Ads MCP server and ads CLI: build and edit campaigns, creatives, audiences, catalogs, and tests; pull reporting | New items start paused; agent work lands as a draft; rules deny actions such as budget increases above 20% |
| Ask Advisor (beta) across Ads, Analytics, Merchant Center, and Google Marketing Platform; AI Max | Official MCP server reads only: list accounts, run GAQL search, read metadata | Seeks approval before changes; unavailable in manager (MCC) accounts | |
| Amazon | Amazon Ads Agent (named September 29, 2026): sponsored ads, Full-Funnel Campaigns, DVA+ | Amazon Ads MCP server (open beta since February 2, 2026): create, update, delete campaigns; reporting | You approve creatives before Full-Funnel Campaigns launch |
| TikTok | Smart+ and Symphony Agent (June 22, 2026) | TikTok Ads MCP server (May 13, 2026): plan, launch, and optimize campaigns | Full, partial, or manual automation by module |
| AppLovin | Axon, bidding to your ROAS, cost per purchase, or cost per lead goal | Campaign Management API for web campaigns | Goal type is fixed at creation |
| ChatGPT | Ads Manager plugin (September 16, 2026) | Acts through the connected user's access | Confirms every change; scheduled reviews never change the account |
| AI inside Classic campaigns since Accelerate retired August 4, 2026 | Marketing API for approved partners | You review and launch | |
| Max campaigns, open to all advertisers since September 3, 2026 | Advertising API supports Max campaigns | You set audience suggestions and constraints |
Read the table as a hiring map. Each native AI is a strong employee of its platform: Meta says advertisers who adopt its assistant's recommendations typically see 5% more conversions at the same cost per conversion, and Reddit reports 17% lower CPA and 27% more conversions in Max campaign split tests. Nobody on this table works for you across platforms. That gap is the job.
What Can an AI Employee Do Inside Meta, Google, and AppLovin Today?
Inside Meta, an AI employee builds and edits full campaigns through the ads MCP server; inside Google, it reads everything and writes through the Google Ads API while Ask Advisor acts with your approval; inside AppLovin, it sets the goal Axon bids to and feeds it creative.
On Meta, delegate the build and the reading. Meta's July 16, 2026 developer post lists campaign, ad set, and ad creation and editing, custom audiences, catalog management, signal diagnostics, A/B tests, and conversion lift studies. Since October 6 an agent can upload creative and preview ads as they appear on Facebook and Instagram. Keep activation behind approval and set two rules on day one: deny budget increases above 20% and deny delivery status changes on your protected campaigns. The guide to AI for Facebook and Instagram ads maps every Advantage+ control.
On Google, Ask Advisor explains performance, troubleshoots policy issues, suggests text and image creatives, and implements changes with your approval. AI Max does the heavy lifting: Google's April 15, 2026 post reports 7% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS with the full feature suite versus search term matching alone (2026 internal data, non-retail advertisers). Automatically created assets and campaign-level broad match began auto-upgrading in September 2026, so set brand controls, location controls, and text guidelines now. The best AI tools for Google Ads covers what sits beside them.
On AppLovin, the employee's work is upstream of Axon. AppLovin's help center lets web campaigns launch at $15 a day but tells you to fund at least 10 purchases a day at your typical CPA: at a $40 CPA, that is $400 a day, or $12,000 a month. Pick ROAS for multi-SKU catalogs, cost per purchase for single-SKU or subscription brands, Day 0 or Day 7 by purchase cycle, and Universal, Prospecting, or Discovery as the audience strategy. Beside AppLovin, Lapis runs Meta, Google, LinkedIn, Reddit, and ChatGPT, with matched landing pages and Wayfinder measurement for those channels.
What Should You Never Hand to an AI Employee?
Never hand an AI employee the decisions that define your company: positioning, claims, budget ceilings, conversion definitions, offers, and account ownership. These are rules, not worries. A good AI employee executes inside them faster than any human team, and a bad one ignores them.
- Brand positioning. You decide who you are for. The employee tests angles inside that position and never picks a new one.
- Regulated claims. Health, financial, legal, and earnings claims need substantiation you own. Keep a banned-claims list and sign off on every new claim.
- Budget ceilings. The employee spends under a monthly ceiling and a daily change cap you write down. Default to Meta's own example: no budget increase above 20% without approval.
- The definition of a conversion. You decide what counts: a paid order, a qualified lead, a booked call. An employee that redefines success grades its own homework.
- Offers and pricing. Discount depth, trials, and guarantees change unit economics. The employee proposes; finance approves.
- Account ownership. You own the ad accounts, pixel data, creative, and landing pages. Grant access; never transfer ownership.
- Protected campaigns. Proven evergreen campaigns stay behind a deny rule on delivery status changes until the employee posts 30 days of clean results.
The complete guide to agentic ads lists the guardrails to configure in each platform before the first dollar moves.
Can an AI Employee Replace Your Media Buyer?
Yes, for the execution work, which is most of a media buyer's week: building campaigns, writing variations, resizing, pausing losers, shifting budget, and assembling reports. Madison and Wall estimated in September 2026 that automated or AI campaign types will take 12% of US ad spend this year, up from 2% in 2023, and 27% by 2030.
The agencies closest to the work expect more. Jellyfish's John Dawson told Digiday in September 2026: "We don't think automation in media stops at 20% or 30%; we think it gets to 90%." Meta's July 29, 2026 earnings call put Advantage+ above a $75 billion annual revenue run rate. The buying is already automated inside each platform; what remains is the judgment across them.
The human keeps the "never hand over" list: positioning, claims, ceilings, and the definition of a good customer. I tell founders to keep one senior performance marketer on strategy and hand the rest of the job to the AI employee. The full forecast is in will AI replace media buyers and ad agencies by 2030, and the Lapis vs media buyer comparison shows the side-by-side.
How Much Does an AI Employee Cost Compared With a Media Buyer or an Agency?
A fully loaded US media buyer costs about $10,627 a month, an agency engagement averages $9,890.93 a month on Clutch, and Lapis Basic costs $99 a month self-serve, with managed plans custom-priced. Compare the AI employee with the payroll or retainer line it replaces, not with a $20 software seat.
| Option | Published rate | Monthly cost | What you still own |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-house media buyer | $89,264 average salary (Salary.com, June 1, 2026) | About $10,627 fully loaded | Creative production, landing pages, cross-channel measurement |
| Media buyer, job-posting base | About $68,400 average base (Indeed, September 27, 2026) | About $8,143 fully loaded | Same |
| Advertising and promotions manager | $133,660 median (BLS, May 2025) | About $15,912 fully loaded | Same |
| Freelancer | $15 to $40 an hour typical for Meta and Google Ads specialists (Upwork) | $2,400 at 60 hours and $40 an hour | Strategy, creative, pages, reporting review |
| Ad agency | $100 to $149 an hour; $9,890.93 a month average engagement (Clutch, September 21, 2026) | $9,890.93 average | Approvals, offers, measurement disputes |
| Lapis Basic | $99 a month, self-serve | $99 | Launching, optimizing, and reporting |
| Lapis Managed Traditional Ads or Managed ChatGPT + LLM Ads | Custom | Your quote | Guardrails and approvals |
The loaded figures divide salary by 0.70, because wages and salaries were 70.0% of private-industry employer compensation in the BLS June 2026 release, then divide by 12. Payscale's July 14, 2026 data shows a lower $60,062 average base, so the in-house line ranges from about $7,150 to $10,627 a month for one buyer.
Worked example: a DTC brand spends $40,000 a month across Meta, Google, and ChatGPT.
- In-house: $10,627 for the buyer plus 40 hours of freelance design at $35 an hour, the top of Upwork's typical designer range ($1,400), equals $12,027 a month, or $301 of overhead per $1,000 of media.
- Agency at 15% of spend: $40,000 × 0.15 = $6,000 a month in fees, before creative production or landing pages billed on top.
- Freelancer: 60 hours at $40 is $2,400 plus $1,400 of design, $3,800 a month, for about three hours of attention per business day.
- AI employee: the buyer works about 173 hours a month (2,080 a year ÷ 12); an AI employee watches the account all 720 hours of a 30-day month. Lapis Managed wins whenever its quote comes in under $12,027, the cost of the hire plus the design work that hire still needs, and its scope adds a matched landing page for every ad.

How Do You Onboard an AI Employee in 30 Days?
Onboard an AI employee the way you onboard a strong hire: give it context and read-only access in week one, let it draft in week two, let it launch with approval in week three, and widen its autonomy in week four only if the numbers earn it. Meta's July 16, 2026 developer guidance states the same principle: start an account read-only or approval-required and widen permissions as confidence grows.
- Days 1 to 7, context and read access. Load the job description, brand rules, banned claims, margins, and 90 days of results. Grant read-only access to every ad account and your store or CRM. Gate: it reproduces last month's spend and confirmed results within 5% of finance's numbers.
- Days 8 to 14, drafts only. It builds four distinct angles per channel, each with a landing page, staged as paused drafts. Gate: you approve at least three of four without rewriting the claims.
- Days 15 to 21, launch with approval. You approve each launch; it sends the daily report and proposes every budget change. Gate: every logged change has a written reason, and every escalation got a same-day response.
- Days 22 to 30, autonomy inside caps. Turn on the "acts without approval" list. Gate: cost per confirmed customer sits at or below the day-one baseline, or the employee shows which channel moved and why.
At day 30, widen, hold, or narrow its permissions, and write the decision into the job description. Set each channel's target before week three with AI ad performance forecasting.
The Tool or Employee Scorecard
The Tool or Employee Scorecard is 10 yes or no tests, one per difference. Score one point per yes. A product earns a yes only if it does the thing today, in your account, without you doing it for it.
| # | Test | Yes means |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Owns a business number | It commits to a KPI from your system of record |
| 2 | Remembers your business | It recalls goals, tests, and rules across sessions |
| 3 | Works across platforms | It launches and moves budget on two or more ad platforms |
| 4 | Acts without being asked | It changes campaigns on a schedule, not only on request |
| 5 | Works inside approvals | It has deny rules, approval thresholds, and a change log |
| 6 | Reports like a teammate | It sends a daily decision note, unprompted |
| 7 | Learns from results | It keeps a test log and builds the next round from winners |
| 8 | Judged on revenue | It reports confirmed sales or leads, counted once |
| 9 | Priced like headcount | Its price compares with the role or retainer it replaces |
| 10 | Answers for mistakes | A named human owns escalations and rollbacks |
Score bands: 0 to 3 is a tool that speeds you up while you do the job. 4 to 6 is a platform employee that runs one platform well and leaves the cross-channel job to you. 7 to 8 is a junior AI employee that needs a manager on measurement and strategy. 9 to 10 is an AI employee you manage with the job description and a weekly review.
Worked example, scored on public documentation as of October 10, 2026:
- ChatGPT Ads Manager plugin: 2 of 10. It works inside approvals (5) and sends scheduled reviews (6). It runs one channel, its reviews recommend rather than act, and it reports ChatGPT Ads data only.
- Meta AI business assistant with Advantage+: 5 of 10. It owns a Meta conversion goal (1), remembers your business (2), works behind previews and approvals (5), is testing scheduled weekly summaries (6), and Advantage+ learns from every auction (7). It stays inside Meta and counts Meta's own conversions.
- Lapis Managed: 10 of 10. Agents and a dedicated strategist own your confirmed-revenue KPI across Meta, Google, LinkedIn, Reddit, and ChatGPT, inside the guardrails you set, with daily reports and Wayfinder measurement.
For a weighted, eight-criteria evaluation of agent vendors, use the scorecard in how to choose an AI marketing agent. Use this one first, to decide whether you are buying a tool or hiring an employee at all.
Why Is Lapis the AI Employee for Paid Growth?
Lapis is the AI employee for paid growth because it owns the outcome across Meta, Google, LinkedIn, Reddit, and ChatGPT, makes the inputs platform AI cannot make for itself (distinct angles, a matched landing page per ad, and clean confirmed-conversion signals), and answers to revenue in your own systems, inside the budgets and approvals you set.
Lapis is one of the fastest-growing Y Combinator startups, and it is built to take over the work legacy agencies and ad buyers used to do. We started Lapis in Y Combinator's Fall 2025 batch, and it is now used by 1,500+ marketing teams and 30+ enterprises, including Samsung, Domino's, Dr Pepper, Mattel, Tata, Tupperware, Amway, and Bata. It is rated 4.9 out of 5 on G2, with eight Summer 2026 G2 badges including Best Results and Fastest Implementation (Mid-Market).
- OmniSense turns one brief into on-brand, correctly sized campaigns for Meta, Google, and LinkedIn, with Reddit on managed plans, forecasts impressions, clicks, CTR, and leads before you spend, and launches every angle as a real experiment.
- ChatSense runs ChatGPT and LLM ad campaigns end to end on managed plans, including Google AI Overviews and AI Mode placements, AI app inventory through networks such as Koah and Gravity, and Sponsored Agents for clients in OpenAI's limited US alpha.
- RapidDomain builds a dedicated landing page for every ad, optimized against real conversions and fed back into the engine.
- Wayfinder connects campaign results to confirmed sales and leads from your CRM, store, or billing system, counts each conversion once, and compares channels on the same attribution rules.
Managed Traditional Ads puts Lapis agents and a dedicated ad strategist in charge of Meta, Google, Reddit, and LinkedIn: they deploy and optimize autonomously, allocate budget inside your guardrails, build RapidDomain pages, and report daily. Legacy agencies and freelancers sell hours; Lapis runs an outcome loop every day. The thesis behind it is in why Lapis is building the AdSense for the AI era, and the AI-native ad agency guide shows how the model differs from an agency that bolted on AI.
