12 Google Ads AI Features to Use in 2026

Google Ads AI features for 2026: all 12 with turn on, test, or skip calls, the exact setting, the guardrail, and the numbers for AI Max and Ask Advisor.

Lapis, the YC-backed #1 AI ad generator rated 4.9/5 on G2, uses AI agents to create, launch, and optimize ads on ChatGPT, Google, Meta, and LinkedIn.

Twelve Google Ads AI features deserve a decision from you in 2026: Ask Advisor, AI Max search term matching, text customization with text guidelines, final URL expansion, brand and location controls, Smart Bidding, Performance Max, channel prioritization, Asset Studio, Demand Gen, ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and the Google Ads MCP server. Turn on eight, test four, and switch off the defaults that spend money without asking.

Digiday reported on September 10, 2026 that close to 30% of Google search spend already runs through AI Max or Performance Max. Each of these features optimizes toward the inputs you give it, so your inputs now decide your results.

Google's AI cannot write your angles, build a page for every ad, or move budget to Meta. Lapis OmniSense does that work.

What AI Is Built Into Google Ads in 2026?

Google Ads runs on four layers of AI in 2026: an agent (Ask Advisor), AI targeting (AI Max, Performance Max, Demand Gen), AI-written creative (text customization, Asset Studio), and AI bidding and budgeting (Smart Bidding, channel prioritization). Google announced most of it at Google Marketing Live on May 20, 2026.

Date (2026)What Google changed
February 26Text guidelines beta opened to all advertisers globally (PPC Land)
April 15AI Max for Search left beta
May 20Ask Advisor, Asset Studio upgrades, new AI Mode ad formats in test, Google Maps in Demand Gen
May 26Display campaigns began moving into Demand Gen
June 11Dynamic Search Ads auto-upgrade pushed to February 2027
August 17 to 27Budget-limited Target CPA and Target ROAS campaigns now bid to target
SeptemberAutomatically created assets and campaign-level broad match moved into AI Max; Search language targeting removed
September 10Data Strength Uplift metric launched; Meridian GeoX opened worldwide
September 22Ask Advisor began making account changes with approval (PPC News Feed)
October 12Automated promotions switched on by default
October 14Channel prioritization and budget allocation announced

Google stopped asking for keywords and bids and started asking for goals, assets, and conversion data. Outside tools are ranked in the best AI tools for Google Ads, and the shift from software you operate to AI that operates for you is the argument of AI Tool vs AI Employee.

What Are the 12 Google Ads AI Features to Use?

Turn on Ask Advisor, AI Max search term matching, text customization with text guidelines, brand and location controls, Smart Bidding, channel prioritization, ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and the read-only Google Ads MCP server. Test final URL expansion, Asset Studio, Demand Gen, and Performance Max outside ecommerce.

1. Ask Advisor: An Analyst That Changes Your Account Only After You Approve

Turn it on today as your first analyst. Ask Advisor is the Gemini agent Google introduced on May 20, 2026 across Google Ads, Google Analytics, Merchant Center, and Google Marketing Platform. It answers questions, explains performance changes, troubleshoots policy issues, drafts text and image assets, and suggests keywords. PPC News Feed reported on September 22, 2026 that it now also pauses campaigns, changes daily budgets, edits locations and final URLs, and appeals disapprovals, each only after you approve.

  • Where it lives: the Ask Advisor icon in the top-right navigation, or the Google Ads search bar. English-language accounts only, and not in manager (MCC) accounts.
  • Guardrail: store your rules in saved info under the three-dot menu, such as "Remember that I only care about ROAS and non-brand growth." Approve one change at a time and log it.
  • Where it stops: one account, Google data only. It never sees Meta or your CRM margins.

2. AI Max Search Term Matching: Reach the Queries Your Keywords Miss

Turn it on for Search campaigns on Smart Bidding with 30 or more conversions a month, and run an experiment first below that. Google moved AI Max out of beta on April 15, 2026 and reports that advertisers who activate it typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS; Search Engine Land reported on June 12, 2026 that it is now the default for new Search campaigns. Enabling it switches on only search term matching, which extends keywords with broad match and keywordless technology.

  • Where it lives: campaign Settings, AI Max section.
  • Guardrail: exclude your own brand on non-brand campaigns and attach negative keyword lists first. Read the search terms report weekly for four weeks, using the AI Max match type and "source" columns.
  • Where it stops: it finds queries, not customers. Import offline conversions or it optimizes toward form fills.

Bidding and budget rules for the same campaigns are in the AI ad optimization playbook.

3. Text Customization With Text Guidelines: Query-Matched Copy Inside Your Rules

Turn it on after you write the guidelines, and keep it off in regulated categories. Text customization, formerly automatically created assets, writes headlines and descriptions from your domain, landing page, ads, and keywords. Text guidelines cap it with up to 25 term exclusions (30 characters each) and 40 messaging restrictions (300 characters each). Asset previews show up to 10 sample headlines and descriptions before you opt in, and the AI Brief closed beta lets you brief AI Max on your business in plain language.

  • Where it lives: AI Max section, Asset optimization, Text customization, then Add text guidelines. Preview examples sits in the same panel.
  • Guardrail: start with "Don't generate assets with prices" (Google says a "$" term exclusion does not block prices), no superlatives, and no competitor names. New guidelines remove noncompliant generated assets, so expect a short dip.
  • Where it stops: it rewrites your page. A vague page produces vague ads.

Angles still come from you; see AI ad angles vs. variations and the AI ad creative brief template.

4. Final URL Expansion: Google Chooses the Landing Page

Test it, and only on sites with a specific, current page for every offer. Final URL expansion sends each click to the page Google predicts fits the query, and it requires text customization. It drives Google's 7% figure: the full suite of search term matching, text customization, and final URL expansion averages 7% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS than search term matching alone.

  • Where it lives: AI Max section, Final URL expansion. URL exclusions, by URL or by rule, are campaign-level; URL inclusions are set per ad group.
  • Guardrail: exclude careers, blog, support, login, and stale pricing pages; one rule such as "URL contains /blog/" covers hundreds at once. Google skips pinned assets when URL inclusions pick a more relevant URL, so keep this off wherever compliance requires pinned legal text.
  • Where it stops: it picks among pages you already have and cannot build the page a query deserves.

That gap is why matched pages win, per do custom landing pages increase conversion rates and dynamic AI landing pages that match every ad.

5. Brand and Location Controls: Keyword Precision Without Keywords

Turn them on before any other AI Max setting. Brand inclusions, at the campaign or ad group level, limit serving to queries about the brands you list. Brand exclusions, at the campaign level, block queries about the brands you name, including your own. Locations of interest, an ad group control that exists only in AI Max, target geographic intent even on keywordless matches.

  • Where they live: the AI Max section for brands and ad group settings for locations of interest. In AI Max experiments, brand settings apply to both arms.
  • Guardrail: exclude your own brand from every non-brand campaign, or AI Max "growth" turns out to be brand traffic changing campaigns. Service businesses get one ad group per city, each with its location of interest.
  • Where it stops: brand inclusions block every query without a brand name, so volume falls by design.

6. Smart Bidding: Target CPA, Target ROAS, and Exploration

Turn it on with targets you would accept, and test Exploration. Smart Bidding (Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize conversions, Maximize conversion value) feeds every other feature here. Between August 17 and 27, 2026, budget-limited Target CPA and Target ROAS campaigns switched to bidding toward the target instead of beating it; in Google's example, a $10 target CPA campaign converting at $5 now drifts toward $10. Smart Bidding Exploration lowers a Target ROAS by a tolerance you set, and Google reports 18% more unique search categories with conversions and 19% more conversions.

  • Where it lives: campaign Settings, Bidding. For Exploration, check "Allow Smart Bidding to explore new traffic" and set a ROAS tolerance. The Bid Target Adjustment Tool flags budget-limited campaigns to reset.
  • Guardrail: reset budget-limited targets to today's economics. Start Exploration at a 10% tolerance (200% becomes 180%), skip budget-limited campaigns, and run six weeks.
  • Where it stops: equal-value form fills teach it to buy cheap leads.

Worked example: $20,000 a month at a 400% ROAS is $80,000 in revenue. At a 360% effective target with 19% more conversions, revenue is $95,200 on $26,444 of spend. The extra $6,444 bought $15,200, a marginal ROAS of 2.36: profitable at a 50% gross margin, a loss at 40%. Keep Exploration only when marginal ROAS beats 1 divided by your gross margin.

7. Performance Max: Every Google Channel in One Campaign, Now With Reporting

Turn it on for ecommerce with a clean Merchant Center feed, and test it for lead gen only with offline conversion imports. Tinuiti's Q1 2026 benchmark found Performance Max took 67% of Google shopping ad-listing spend among advertisers running both campaign types, up from 53% a year earlier. Google's August 7, 2025 update added negative keyword lists (up to 10,000 campaign-level negatives), 50 search themes per asset group, device and age targeting, and removable reporting for generated assets.

  • Where it lives: Insights and reports, then Channel performance; the Search terms report under "Search terms and landing pages for Performance Max."
  • Guardrail: add brand exclusions, exclude your customer list on acquisition campaigns, and read the channel report weekly. Tinuiti found non-shopping search and display reached 35% of Performance Max spend in Q1 2026.
  • Where it stops: Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail, and Discover stay bundled as "Google channels," so you cannot rank one above another.

The operator view is on the Lapis vs Performance Max page, and catalog creative is covered in how to create ecommerce ads with AI.

Turn it on the day it reaches your account. Google announced channel prioritization and budget allocation on October 14, 2026, rolling out from October 15. High priority channels, the default, get funded first; Low priority channels get the remainder, optionally capped at a percentage of average daily budget, and 0% stops spend. Priority matters only when a campaign is limited by budget; the cap applies either way, on a best-effort basis.

Campaign typeChannels you can rankCap on Low priority
SearchGoogle Search, search partners, Display NetworkYes
ShoppingGoogle Search, search partnersYes
Performance MaxGoogle channels (bundled), search partners, Display NetworkYes
Demand GenGoogle channels (bundled), Display NetworkNo
  • Where it lives: Account settings, Channel Prioritization card, or campaign Settings to override. You cannot set it from a manager account.
  • Guardrail: my default is Google Search at High, search partners at Low with a 5% cap, and Display at Low with 0% until your CRM proves Display pays. On $1,000 a day, 5% holds partners near $50.
  • Where it stops: it ranks Google's properties against third-party supply and never moves a dollar to Meta.

From February 2027, Search campaigns with Display expansion migrate automatically, and Google says Display at Low priority with a 50% allocation keeps today's behavior.

9. Asset Studio: Product Images, Video, and One-Click Creative Tests

Test it for product imagery and asset gaps, and keep creative strategy in your own hands. Asset Studio holds product imagery generation from one or two photos, an AI image editor, a video builder, trimming, and voiceover. On May 20, 2026 Google added generation from your brief, brand guidelines, and website across creative themes, Gemini Omni video, and 1-Click A/B Testing, rolling out in English over the summer.

  • Where it lives: Tools, then Asset studio, or the media picker in Performance Max and Demand Gen asset groups.
  • Guardrail: check every product image against the real product. Test one variable per 1-Click A/B test at a 50% split for at least four weeks.
  • Where it stops: assets serve on Google only and vary the themes you brief. Every other channel needs its own creative.

Test design that finds real winners is in AI ad creative testing at scale.

10. Demand Gen: YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Maps, and Display in One Visual Buy

Test it once Search and Performance Max are profitable. Demand Gen serves image, video, carousel, and product-feed ads on YouTube, Discover, Gmail, the Display Network, and, new in 2026, Google Maps. Google said on May 26, 2026 that Display campaigns move into Demand Gen by 2027 and that adding Display inside Demand Gen lifts ROI 9.5% on average. Large-catalog campaigns typically see 33% more conversions with a product feed, per Google.

  • Where it lives: new campaign, then Demand Gen. Channel controls switch each surface on or off.
  • Guardrail: run an Uplift Experiment before scaling; read view-through conversions separately.
  • Where it stops: it behaves like a social feed and needs Meta-grade creative volume.

The volume math is in why ad creative volume testing matters, and Demand Gen's rank among mid-funnel buys is in the best ad channels for mid-funnel marketing.

11. Ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode: Answers That Carry Your Ad

Turn it on by doing nothing, then feed it. Search Engine Land's October 9, 2026 guide confirms there is no AI Mode campaign, no placement selection, and no opt-out: eligible Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns serve there through the normal auction. Exact and phrase match entered only a small September test for clear intent, so AI Max, broad match, and Performance Max carry most of this inventory. Google said AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users in May 2026, and SE Ranking found text ads in 29.45% of AI Mode responses across 50,032 US commercial keywords. Google is also testing Conversational Discovery ads and Highlighted Answers, each with a Gemini-written explainer beside your creative.

  • Where it lives: nowhere separate. Results fold into campaign and search terms reports.
  • Guardrail: negative keywords and brand exclusions apply. Keep landing pages factual, because Gemini reads them.
  • Where it stops: ads inside AI Overviews run in English in the US and a few English-speaking markets, and the UK is not one of them.

Every assistant that sells ads is compared in which AI assistants have ads in 2026, and ChatGPT's version of this placement is in 10 ways to advertise on ChatGPT.

12. The Google Ads MCP Server: Read-Only Data for Outside AI Agents

Turn it on for analysis only. Google's official Google Ads MCP server connects agents such as Claude or ChatGPT to the Google Ads API, read-only in its current release, through three tools: list_accessible_customers, search, and get_resource_metadata. Google's developer guide states it cannot modify bids, pause campaigns, or create assets.

  • Where it lives: the googleads/google-ads-mcp repository, authenticated with OAuth 2.0 or a service account.
  • Guardrail: connect a read-only service account and join CRM data outside Google.
  • Where it stops: it reads. Meta's ads MCP server, opened to any developer app on July 16, 2026, creates and edits campaigns behind advertiser-set rules.

The analysis prompts are in how to analyze Meta and Google Ads data with ChatGPT, and the agent picture is mapped in the agentic ads guide.

Is AI Max Worth Turning On?

Yes, for most Search accounts on Smart Bidding with steady conversion volume. Google's internal data for non-retail advertisers shows 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS when advertisers activate AI Max, and 7% more for the full suite versus search term matching alone.

The 7% compares the full suite with search term matching alone, not with no AI Max. And "at a similar CPA" means more conversions at the same price, which needs more spend; since August 17, a budget-limited Target CPA campaign bids to its target, so a capped budget captures none of the lift.

Worked example: $30,000 a month buys 600 conversions at a $50 CPA. A 14% lift is 684 conversions costing $34,200. Hold $30,000 and you stay near 600, so test with 15% budget headroom.

Retailers in the AI Max for Shopping closed beta, launched April 30, 2026, get product titles rewritten to the query and an average 5% lift at a similar CPA or ROAS. To test Search, open Experiments, the plus button, Campaign features and settings, then AI Max for Search campaigns; run a 50% split for four to six weeks and judge it on CRM-qualified conversions.

What Changes When Dynamic Search Ads Become AI Max?

Dynamic Search Ads keep running until February 2027, when Google starts upgrading the remaining DSA campaigns to AI Max with all three features switched on and legacy URL controls preserved. You can still create new DSA campaigns until January 2027.

Legacy settingUpgrade dateAI Max features switched on
Dynamic Search AdsFebruary 2027Search term matching, text customization, final URL expansion
Automatically created assetsSeptember 2026Search term matching, text customization
Campaign-level broad matchSeptember 2026Search term matching

Google announced the upgrade on April 15, 2026 and revised it on June 11, restoring DSA creation from June 15. Search also lost campaign language targeting in late September, so keep one language per ad group, as how to create multilingual ad campaigns with AI recommends.

  1. Filter Change history to September 2026 and list every campaign that moved into AI Max.
  2. Run a custom experiment on each DSA campaign: in the draft, open the Dynamic Search Ads settings and select Upgrade campaign.
  3. Rebuild page targets as URL inclusions per ad group and exclusions as campaign URL rules.
  4. Write text guidelines and brand exclusions first.
  5. Upgrade manually in December or January, or Google picks the date and the defaults.

What Can Ask Advisor Change Without Your Approval?

Nothing. Google states that Ask Advisor makes recommendations and seeks your approval before completing actions or making changes to your account. With approval it pauses and renames campaigns, changes daily budgets, updates locations and final URLs, and appeals disapprovals; reports, diagnoses, and drafts change nothing until you act. It is unavailable in manager (MCC) accounts.

The approval click is the only gate, so write the policy before your team starts clicking:

  • Approve freely: reports, diagnoses, keyword ideas, and drafts you edit before they serve.
  • Approve with a second person: final URL edits, which break tracking parameters, and location changes.
  • Never approve from chat: budget increases above 20%, pausing brand campaigns, and bid strategy changes.
  • Log every approval with the date, so you can read the result two weeks later.

Thirty client accounts mean thirty sessions, each blind to the others: the line between platform AI and the cross-channel operator in how to choose an AI marketing agent.

The Google Ads AI Feature Matrix gives all 12 features a call (on, test, or skip) for lead gen, ecommerce, local, and B2B accounts, plus the input each needs and the first control to set. Stop at the first input you are missing.

Score one point for each row where you already have the required input. At 10 to 12 points, your account is ready for full AI automation. At 6 to 9, fix the missing inputs first. Under 6, stay on Smart Bidding and standard Search until tracking matches your CRM.

Which Google Ads AI Defaults Should You Turn Off?

Turn off automated promotions, auto-applied keyword and bidding recommendations, and generated copy in regulated categories. Google switched automated promotions on by default on October 12, 2026 for Search and Performance Max campaigns with location assets and no promotion assets, and it pulls coupons and deals from your website into your ads.

  1. Automated promotions. Campaigns, Assets, the three-dot More menu, Account level automated assets, More, Advanced settings, then set Automated promotions to Off. Otherwise a new-customer code on a public page lands in an ad.
  2. Auto-applied recommendations. Campaigns, Recommendations, Auto-apply settings, Manage tab: uncheck keywords and targeting and bidding, then Save. Repeat in every account.
  3. Text customization in regulated categories. Finance, health, insurance, and legal advertisers keep it off; generated copy has no idea what your regulator requires.
  4. Display inside Search campaigns. Set the Display Network to Low priority at 0%, or 50% to keep today's behavior, before February 2027.
  5. Search partners at High priority. Move partners to Low with a 5% cap once channel prioritization reaches your account.

Where Does Google's AI Stop?

Google's AI stops at Google's edge. It optimizes toward the conversions you send and cannot create the four inputs it depends on most: distinct creative angles, a matched landing page per query theme, budget moves to other platforms, and revenue confirmed in your CRM.

Cross-channel budget. Channel prioritization ranks Google Search against search partners and Display. No Google setting compares your Google CPA with your Meta CPA and moves the dollar. AppLovin's Axon has the same boundary inside its own network, as 10 ways to advertise on AppLovin shows.

Landing pages. Final URL expansion chooses among existing pages. Building the page your best query deserves is the work in how to create a landing page with AI that converts.

Creative angles. Text customization rewrites your page and Asset Studio varies the themes you brief. Neither knows which objection your sales team hears most.

Confirmed revenue. Google's Data Strength Uplift metric is Google's own estimate of conversions your data setup recovers, and recovered conversions are not incremental sales. Google grades its own homework, like every other platform.

That list is the job description of an AI employee working above the platforms, traced in will AI replace media buyers and ad agencies by 2030 and turned into first moves in how to use AI for paid ads.

How Do You Measure Google's AI Next to Meta and ChatGPT?

Measure every channel against the same confirmed sales and qualified leads, counted once, then check incrementality with lift tests. Google made Conversion Lift self-serve for accounts with at least 1,000 observed conversions and a $5,000 study budget, and opened Meridian GeoX, its open-source geo-experiment library, worldwide on September 10, 2026.

Each platform counts itself, including ChatGPT Ads, which OpenAI says reaches 1.2 billion weekly users and runs self-serve in 63 countries from a $25 daily minimum in the US.

  1. Pick one source of truth: your CRM, store, or billing system.
  2. Send confirmed outcomes back: offline conversion imports for Google, the Conversions API for Meta, the OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API for ChatGPT.
  3. Count each customer once, on one attribution rule for every channel.
  4. Run one lift test per quarter: Google Conversion Lift if you qualify, a geo holdout with Meridian GeoX if you do not.
  5. Shift budget 10% at a time toward the lowest cost per confirmed customer.

Worked example: a DTC brand spends $78,000 in one month.

ChannelSpendPlatform conversionsPlatform CPAConfirmed customers (CRM)Cost per confirmed customer
Google$41,000410$100260$158
Meta$30,000380$79220$136
ChatGPT$7,00070$10060$117
Total$78,000860$91540$144

The platforms claim 860 conversions for 540 real customers, a 59% overcount, and the cheapest channel flips from Meta to ChatGPT. Why Do Teams Run Google Ads With Lapis?

Teams run Google Ads with Lapis because Google's AI needs inputs it cannot make, and Lapis makes them every day: distinct angles for every asset slot, a matched landing page for every ad, budget judgment across Google, Meta, LinkedIn, Reddit, and ChatGPT, and revenue confirmed in your CRM. Lapis agents and a dedicated ad strategist own that loop inside the budgets and approvals you set.

Lapis is one of the fastest-growing Y Combinator startups, and it is built to take over the work legacy agencies and ad buyers used to do. I started it because every ad platform hired an AI employee for itself, and businesses had nobody working for them across all of them.

Lapis is a Y Combinator Fall 2025 company rated 4.9 out of 5 on G2, with eight Summer 2026 G2 badges including High Performer and Best Results, and it is used by 1,500+ marketing teams and 30+ enterprises, including Samsung, Domino's, Dr Pepper, Mattel, and Tata.
