10 Ways to Advertise on AppLovin in 2026

How to advertise on AppLovin in 2026: 10 ways, from ROAS and CPP goals to Dynamic Catalog and the MCP, with budgets, specs, and a launch checklist.

Lapis, the YC-backed #1 AI ad generator rated 4.9/5 on G2, uses AI agents to create, launch, and optimize ads on ChatGPT, Google, Meta, and LinkedIn.

You advertise on AppLovin in 2026 by opening a self-serve AppLovin Ads account, installing the AppLovin pixel or Shopify app, and giving Axon one number to hit: a ROAS goal, a cost per purchase, or a cost per lead. AppLovin opened the platform to every business on June 23, 2026, with no referral code, and its help center says you can launch from $15 a day.

There are 10 ways in: three goal types, new-customer audience strategies, Dynamic Catalog, AI creative, app campaigns, the AppLovin MCP, and agency partners. Treat AppLovin as the third performance engine beside Meta and Google, never the first. Beside it, Lapis OmniSense runs the rest of your paid mix on Meta, Google, LinkedIn, and Reddit, and ChatSense runs ChatGPT.

What Is AppLovin Ads, and What Happened to Axon?

AppLovin Ads is AppLovin's self-serve performance ad platform, and Axon is the AI recommendation system that runs every campaign on it. AppLovin's June 23, 2026 announcement renamed the platform from Axon back to AppLovin Ads, moved it onto the AppLovin domain, and opened it to any business that wants to reach its billion-plus daily active users.

AppLovin opened Axon Ads Manager to web advertisers by referral on October 1, 2025, and CEO Adam Foroughi said on November 5, 2025 that their spend was growing roughly 50% week over week. On June 23, 2026, the gate came down: "For 14 years, advertising with AppLovin required a relationship with our team. For the past eight months, it required a referral code. Starting today, it requires neither."

Your ads run full screen inside mobile games such as Candy Crush, Sudoku, Solitaire, and Words With Friends, and AppLovin's help center counts more than 150 million daily active users in the US alone. AppLovin sells performance only. The June 23 post says: "We don't do brand marketing. Every advertiser on the platform buys based on measurable performance."

AppLovin's second-quarter 2026 results, filed with the SEC on August 5, 2026, show revenue of $1.924 billion, up 53% year over year. Gaming is still the majority, but Foroughi said consumer advertiser spend set a record, 28% above Q4 2025, the seasonal peak. Axon is a strong employee of AppLovin's platform; AI tool vs AI employee for running ads explains why that differs from an employee who works for you.

Who Should Advertise on AppLovin in 2026?

Advertise on AppLovin in 2026 if you sell a consumer product, app, or subscription online, can fund about 10 conversions a day, and can supply 9:16 video. AppLovin's Sam Appelbaum told tipsheet.ai on June 25, 2026 that the platform is working for physical goods brands, apps, and increasingly lead-gen businesses such as auto insurance, health insurance, and home services.

Four groups win on AppLovin today:

  • Mobile games and apps. AppLovin's original business. Foroughi said on August 5, 2026 that a new game's return goals "are hit really, really quickly. There's almost no learning budget."
  • Mid-market DTC brands. Foroughi called mid-market "a sweet spot right now" on the same call, because those brands absorb learning costs and scale. Small shops spending very few dollars are less likely to hit their goals.
  • Subscriptions and digital products. The help center supports both, and the Dynamic Offering Catalog serves businesses with few SKUs.
  • Lead generation, in testing. Cost-per-lead campaigns exist, but Foroughi said the lead-gen business "is still work in progress, so we're still in testing with customers."

Wait if your buyers are mostly in the EU: Foroughi said on November 5, 2025 that AppLovin does not open its EU audience to website or shop advertisers because GDPR requires a build-out. Wait if you sell B2B, since the help center says most advertisers and content are consumer-focused. Plan for review in restricted categories. AppLovin's Policies for Demand Partners, revised December 16, 2025, require account-team approval for alcohol, gambling, CBD and hemp, financial services, health and pharmaceutical products, legal services, and cause-based ads. Tobacco and nicotine are prohibited.

What Are the 10 Ways to Advertise on AppLovin?

There are 10 ways to advertise on AppLovin in 2026: self-serve Ads Manager, ROAS goal campaigns, cost-per-purchase campaigns, cost-per-lead campaigns, Prospecting and Discovery audiences, Dynamic Catalog, AI-generated creative, app campaigns, the AppLovin MCP and APIs, and agency or partner buying. Ways 2 to 4 are goal types. Ways 5 to 7 are levers inside a campaign.

1. Self-Serve AppLovin Ads Manager: Launch Without a Sales Call

Self-serve Ads Manager is the base every other way sits on. Create an account, add a card, install the pixel, set brand assets, and build one campaign. Shopify stores install the AppLovin app, which sets up the pixel, syncs the catalog, and configures purchase tracking. Everyone else installs through Google Tag Manager and validates with AppLovin's Pixel Helper.

Every new account prepays: at 0:00 UTC your card is charged for the next day's budget as a deposit, and unused funds return to your balance at about 03:00 UTC. Add two backup cards, because a failed charge stops delivery. AppLovin's promotional terms give new web advertisers who spend $5,000 within 60 days a $5,000 ad credit, issued within seven days, one per advertiser; customers of AppLovin marketing partners get a flat $1,000 credit instead. Launch only when every required event shows without errors in Events Manager.

2. ROAS Goal Campaigns: Buy Revenue at a Target Return

A ROAS goal tells Axon to maximize revenue against a return you set. The help center recommends it for multi-SKU brands and asks for the target as a percentage, so a 2x goal is 200%. Pick Day 0 for products people buy the day they click, which AppLovin says covers most of its purchases, or Day 7 for considered products.

Set the first goal at break-even, not at your Meta number. Break-even ROAS equals 1 divided by gross margin, so a 60% margin brand enters 167%. AppLovin's reporting counts click-attributed purchases by default, so a target copied from a Meta 7-day-click, 1-day-view account starves delivery, and AppLovin's scaling guidance warns that unrealistic goals keep a campaign from spending. Raise the goal 10 points once the campaign spends its full budget for seven straight days. Measure D0 and D7 ROAS, new-customer revenue share, and pacing.

3. Cost Per Purchase Campaigns: Hold a Fixed Acquisition Cost

A cost-per-purchase (CPP) goal tells Axon to hit a dollar cost per order, and the help center recommends it for single-SKU brands and subscriptions. Your ceiling is first-order gross profit plus expected repeat-order profit inside your payback window.

Use Day 7 for high-AOV products such as furniture, mattresses, and high-ticket health products. Day 7 campaigns exit learning more slowly, and the FAQ calls strong Day 1 and Day 2 results the early signal that one is scaling safely. Measure CPP on D0 and D7, payback days, and CPP against your Meta CPA on the same new-customer definition.

4. Cost Per Lead Campaigns: Lead Generation With Quality Signals

A cost-per-lead (CPL) goal tells Axon to minimize the cost of a lead. The launch checklist lists CPL beside CPP and ROAS, and the FAQ tells lead-gen and digital-services businesses to connect the Conversion API alongside the pixel because it "gives the model stronger signal to optimize toward lead quality, and lets you avoid sending leads that aren't valuable to your business."

Run CPL only if you send lead outcomes back fast. Maximum CPL equals gross profit per sale times your lead-to-sale rate: an insurance agency earning $400 per policy that closes 10% of leads caps CPL at $40. Insurance advertisers confirm eligibility with the account team first, because financial services is a restricted category. Measure cost per qualified lead and cost per sale, never cost per form fill.

5. Prospecting and Discovery Campaigns: Pay for New Customers

Both CPP and ROAS campaigns take one of three audience strategies. Universal values new and returning customers the same. Prospecting optimizes for people who have never bought from you. Discovery, launched February 25, 2026, optimizes for purchases from people who have never visited your site; AppLovin said its alpha tests more than doubled the share of new visitors for several brands.

Both new-customer strategies need to know who your customers are. Connect the Shopify app, or upload all order history through Events Manager as CSV files of up to 200 MB with country code, currency, email, event name, timestamp, transaction ID, user ID, and value; AppLovin deduplicates on transaction ID. Jefferies' survey of 30 AppLovin ecommerce advertisers, reported July 10, 2026, found 73% saw higher new-customer revenue from Prospecting, up from 60%. Make Prospecting your default when email and SMS already convert repeat buyers, and run Universal beside it when finance reads total ROAS.

6. Dynamic Catalog: Personalized Products After the Video

Dynamic Catalog is the third screen of an AppLovin shopping ad: personalized product recommendations after the video and interactive, each linked to its product page. AppLovin's help center says brands with five or more SKUs typically see a 10% to 25% lift in conversion metrics, and recommends keeping it on in every eligible campaign.

Build the catalog in Catalog Manager three ways. The pixel method infers products from events, so purchase and view_item events need matching item_id and item_variant_id values, plus an image_url on view_item. A hosted CSV syncs once a day, so keep sale price at or below price and commas out of fields. The Shopify connection keeps price and availability current. Brands with fewer than five or six offers use the Dynamic Offering Catalog, with at least six offers. The ecommerce AI ad generator guide covers prepping product imagery for catalog formats.

7. AI Creative Tools: Generated Interactives and URL-to-Video

AppLovin now builds part of your ad for you. Its March 4, 2026 post describes a multi-agent pipeline that generates interactive pages from your site's assets, language, and offers; in the first two weeks a few hundred advertisers opted in and launched thousands of them. Upload brand guidelines (palette, typography, visual style, written instructions) in Ads Manager and every generated asset follows them.

Video is the harder half. AppLovin previewed URL-to-video generation for early-access testers on March 20, 2026. Appelbaum said on June 25 that the interactive generator is "live and broadly adopted," with about 80% of top advertisers using interactives. Foroughi said on August 5 that AppLovin auto-generates end cards "with pretty high efficiency" but cannot yet hand advertisers a high-quality 30 to 60 second video out of the box. Jefferies found half its respondents had tested AI end cards and half AI video; six reported ROAS gains from AI video and four from end cards.

Use generated interactives for volume and keep a human-edited hero video in every set. The guide to scaling UGC campaigns with AI, Creatify alternatives, and AI ad generators for TikTok cover the vertical-video tools for this format.

8. App Install and In-App Event Campaigns: The Original Business

App campaigns buy installs and in-app actions with six goal types, per AppLovin's Campaign Management API documentation: cost per install (targets below $200), cost per custom event (below $500), cost per purchaser (below $500), and ROAS goals for ad revenue, in-app purchase revenue, or blended revenue. Choose target-goal bidding billed per install, or automatic bidding billed per impression that spends the full budget at the lowest cost per result.

Tracking comes first. AppLovin requires a mobile measurement partner configured before launch: Adjust, AppsFlyer, Kochava, Tenjin, Singular, or Branch, with a click lookback of at least 7 days and a view lookback of at least 24 hours. Send only revenue from direct user payments, never predicted LTV, and budget for 15 to 20 optimization events per day.

9. The AppLovin MCP and APIs: Let an AI Agent Operate the Account

AppLovin put its own agent door in limited beta on May 13, 2026. The AppLovin MCP connects Ads Manager to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or any MCP client, so an agent adjusts budgets, clones campaigns, creates a Discovery campaign at a 100% ROAS goal, uploads videos, and pulls ROAS by campaign. Access is whitelist-only through your account team and needs Campaign Management and Reporting API keys.

Start the agent read-only: setting APPLOVIN_READONLY to true disables every write tool, and AppLovin says the MCP "doesn't provide campaign strategy." Before granting writes, set a daily spend ceiling, a maximum percentage change, and campaigns the agent never touches. The agentic ads guide and how to choose an AI marketing agent cover the permission model.

10. Agencies and Partners: Buy With an Operator Who Knows the Format

The last way is to hand the account to someone who already runs AppLovin. Stagwell's March 10, 2026 partnership gives its clients AppLovin setup, optimization, and creative support, and Foroughi said on August 5 that AppLovin sources mid-market advertisers through ecommerce analytics partners, confirming Triple Whale when an analyst named it.

Read the incentives first: AppLovin's affiliate terms pay approved partners 3% of a referred brand's qualifying ad spend for 12 months. Agency management adds fees on top of media, which how much an ad agency costs in 2026 breaks down. One upside is real: buyers told AdExchanger on August 12, 2026 that AppLovin's account service beats Meta's and Google's.

How Does Axon Decide Who Sees Your Ad?

Axon predicts, for every ad slot inside a mobile game, which advertiser and which creative will produce the outcome each advertiser asked for, then prices that prediction in one auction. Foroughi said on August 5, 2026 that AppLovin runs "one auction across multiple advertiser categories," so your skincare ad competes with game installs for the same break between levels.

You control four inputs: the goal and day target (what to buy), your pixel, Conversion API, and order history (who buys), your creative (additional signal, in the help center's words), and geography (countries plus state exclusions). Foroughi put the data point bluntly: advertisers "have to share their data with us to tap into the deep learning model."

You do not control audiences. Will Frank of AS Beauty told AdExchanger on August 12, 2026 that AppLovin has no audience controls and no keyword strategies, and that advertisers choose between Discovery and Prospecting campaigns "and that's pretty much it." Reporting shows operating system, time of day, and creative unit (rewarded or interstitial), not the apps your ads ran in.

Work with the model:

  • Start with one campaign and one global budget. Group creative sets by product inside it, then split out a product once it proves itself.
  • Keep all states on. Deselect only states you do not serve or are holding out for a test.
  • Leave weak-looking creative sets running for 14 days. A user sees about eight creatives before converting, per the launch checklist, so a weak last-click set is often doing early-funnel work.

What Creative Does AppLovin Need?

AppLovin needs three screens per ad: a full-screen 9:16 video up to 60 seconds, an AppLovin Interactive Page after the video, and for ecommerce, a Dynamic Catalog of recommended products. Appelbaum told tipsheet.ai on June 25, 2026 that "each screen is its own conversion lever," and Foroughi called creative "the biggest hurdle in our system" on August 5.

ComponentSpecificationRule That Moves Results
Video9:16 portrait, MP4, MOV, or M4V, at least 270x480, up to 1 GB and 60 secondsLead with the value proposition: videos are skip-delayed at least five seconds
Video lengthA range, weighted to 30 seconds and longerRewarded inventory guarantees at least 35 seconds of attention
CaptionsBurned-in subtitlesMost users watch with sound off
Interactive page (image)Portrait GIF, JPEG, or PNG, at least 270x480, up to 10 MBLead with the offer; set CTA text in brand settings because AppLovin overlays the CTA
Interactive page (HTML)Built in Creative Studio or by AppLovin's AI pipelineTest promo, social proof, and product showcase versions
Dynamic CatalogProduct Catalog for 5+ SKUs, Offering Catalog for fewerKeep it on in every eligible campaign
Creative setAt least one video and one interactive or image, up to 10 of eachBuild each set around one audience, offer, or product

Volume wins on Axon. The FAQ says many brands run hundreds of videos and images in a single campaign without issue. Launch with three creative sets of five videos and three interactives each, then add two or three new videos per set every 14 days. Reuse Meta and TikTok winners as a starting point, then recut them: the launch checklist says AppLovin is "not a social or search feed," and Appelbaum noted that social assets are built for a three-second hook while AppLovin runs up to 60 seconds.

Build each set from a distinct angle, not a reworded copy of the last one. AI ad angles vs variations shows the difference, why ad creative volume testing matters explains the math, and the AI ad creative brief template gives your editor the 12 inputs to brief from.

How Much Does AppLovin Advertising Cost?

You pay for media only: AppLovin bills ad spend daily from a prepaid card, and a campaign launches from $15 a day. The real floor is higher. The help center tells web advertisers to aim for at least 10 purchases a day at their typical CPA, and Triple Whale's September 21, 2026 benchmarks put AppLovin's median CPA at $66.89, against $39.24 on Meta and $28.59 on Google.

Read those benchmarks carefully. Triple Whale shows AppLovin's median ROAS at 1.21, the lowest of eight platforms, on platform-reported numbers. AppLovin's default reporting counts clicks only while Meta's also counts one-day views, so compare holdout results, not dashboards. Haus's June 18, 2026 analysis of 15 months of AppLovin incrementality tests shows what serious tests cost: about $4,800 in average daily spend over a median of 20 days.

Use this calculator before you set a budget:

Break-even ROAS = 1 / gross margin
Max CPP (first order) = AOV x gross margin
Max CPP (with repeat) = AOV x gross margin x orders per customer in payback window
Daily budget = target CPP x 10
Test budget = daily budget x 21 days
Cash outlay = test budget minus ad credit (if eligible)
Calibration factor = holdout iROAS / dashboard ROAS for the same window

Worked example: a Shopify skincare brand sells a $72 average order at a 70% gross margin, and customers place 1.5 orders in six months. Break-even ROAS is 1 / 0.70 = 1.43, entered as 143%. First-order max CPP is $72 x 0.70 = $50.40, and with repeat orders it is $75.60. The brand sets a $50 CPP target, so the daily budget is $500 and the 21-day test costs $10,500. It crosses $5,000 of spend on day 10, the credit lands within seven days and covers most of the remaining $5,500, so cash outlay is about $5,500. If the holdout shows 1.6x iROAS against a dashboard ROAS of 1.25x, the calibration factor is 1.28 and the channel clears break-even. Scale 20% a week while marginal iROAS stays above 1.43.

The AI ad optimization playbook covers budget pacing, and how to A/B test AI ads on a small budget shows why underfunded tests pick false winners.

Is AppLovin Better Than Meta for Ecommerce?

No. AppLovin is a stronger third channel than a first one. Meta reached 3.60 billion daily active people in June 2026 and gives you targeting, placement, and creative controls AppLovin does not; AppLovin wins on incremental new customers once Meta is working. Jefferies' survey, reported July 10, 2026, found AppLovin's budget share rose 169 basis points to 11.1%, top three by share and ROAS, just ahead of TikTok.

The share shift came from new money, not cuts: Jefferies wrote that Meta and Google lost share because advertisers diversified incremental spend toward AppLovin and TikTok rather than reducing Meta and Google. Independent tests back AppLovin as incremental and warn about scale:

  • Haus, June 18, 2026. AppLovin's DTC efficiency was 1.11x the other channels the same brands tested, and new customers drove 66.3% of its DTC impact. But its rate of beating the typical test fell from 63% to 85% each quarter of 2025 to 53% in Q1 2026 and 50% in Q2.
  • Triple Whale, August 6, 2026. Across 755 shops, AppLovin returned 2.90 lifetime ROAS on Triple Whale's attribution against 2.08 for other platforms, and five of seven geo holdouts showed significant lifts of 3.5% to 13.5%. AppLovin was only 7.7% of combined spend.

Add AppLovin when four conditions hold: Meta is profitable at current spend, your Meta marginal CPA has risen for 90 days, you have five or more 9:16 videos, and you can hold out states. Keep AppLovin under 10% of paid spend until a holdout proves it; Haus says under 5% you are validating the channel and near 10% you are testing marginal efficiency. See the best ad channels for mid-funnel marketing and the ChatGPT ads playbook for Shopify and DTC brands for the other incremental channels.

The AppLovin Launch Checklist

Run these 16 steps in order before the first dollar.

  1. Score 80 or higher on the AppLovin Fit Scorecard, or fix the failing rows first.
  2. Confirm your category is unrestricted, or get written account-team approval for alcohol, gambling, CBD, financial services, health, legal, or cause-based ads.
  3. Create the account, add a primary card plus two backups, and confirm whether your sign-up path carries the $5,000 or $1,000 credit.
  4. Install the AppLovin Shopify app, or the pixel through Google Tag Manager, and validate it with Pixel Helper.
  5. Connect the Conversion API if you sell leads, subscriptions, or digital services.
  6. Upload all historical order data through Events Manager, or confirm the Shopify connection, so Prospecting and Discovery work.
  7. Sync the catalog in Catalog Manager and clear every item_id, item_variant_id, and image_url error.
  8. Add brand assets (logo, name, description, CTA text) and upload brand guidelines for AI-generated interactives.
  9. Select your measurement partner in the tracking parameters dropdown so UTMs append to every creative set.
  10. Build one campaign: CPP or ROAS goal, Day 0 or Day 7 target, goal set at break-even.
  11. Choose Prospecting for new-customer growth or Universal for total ROAS, and log the choice.
  12. Target every country you ship to in that campaign, outside the EU for web.
  13. Set the daily budget to 10 times your target CPP and commit to 21 days.
  14. Load three creative sets, each with five 9:16 videos (at least two of 30 seconds or longer) and three interactives.
  15. Enable Dynamic Catalog at campaign level.
  16. Pick 20% to 30% of US states as a holdout, record their revenue baseline, and write your scale or stop rule before launch.

How Do You Measure AppLovin Next to Meta and Google?

Measure AppLovin with a geo holdout, not its dashboard. AppLovin's own measurement page says the gap between in-platform ROAS and geo-holdout incremental ROAS "has more than doubled over the past year." Use the dashboard to steer daily, a measurement partner to compare channels weekly, and a holdout each quarter to set the calibration factor.

Know what the dashboard counts. Ads Manager reports in two modes: Clicks, and Clicks and views, which adds purchases within one day of an ad view; DTC Newsletter reported on July 24, 2026 that the second mode is opt-in. Switching modes recalculates history but never changes optimization, targeting, or billing. Day 0 covers 24 hours after the engagement and Day 7 covers 192 hours after a click. AppLovin reports in UTC, so align time zones before you reconcile. Its integrated measurement partners are Northbeam, Triple Whale, WorkMagic, Measured, Prescient, Converge, Hyros, Daasity, RedTrack, Attribuly, Elevar, and Fospha.

Run the holdout in six steps:

  1. Rank US states by trailing 90-day revenue and assign every fourth state to the holdout, so the groups match on size.
  2. Deselect the holdout states at campaign level.
  3. Run 21 to 28 days at full budget; Triple Whale's geo tests ran three to five weeks and Haus's median test ran 20 days.
  4. Track a one- to two-week post-treatment window. Haus found AppLovin's post-treatment lift was 1.18x its in-test lift, against 1.39x for other channels, so it works fast.
  5. Compute iROAS as incremental revenue in test states divided by AppLovin spend, and the calibration factor as iROAS divided by dashboard ROAS.
  6. Score new-customer revenue separately and expect a smaller retail halo: Haus found AppLovin's omnichannel halo was +25%, against a +40% median for other channels.

Hold every channel to one rule: incremental new-customer revenue per dollar, never three platforms' self-reported ROAS. The ChatGPT ads ROI measurement framework applies the same holdout logic, how to build an AI-powered paid ads stack shows where measurement sits, and is retargeting dead explains why first-party data now decides credit.

Why Is Lapis the AI Employee for the Rest of Your Paid Mix?

Axon is a strong employee of AppLovin: it optimizes inside one network, toward AppLovin's own count of conversions. Your growth also runs through Meta, Google, LinkedIn, Reddit, and ChatGPT, and Lapis agents plus a dedicated ad strategist own those channels end to end, inside the budgets and approvals you set, answering to confirmed revenue.

Lapis is one of the fastest-growing Y Combinator startups, and it is built to take over the work legacy agencies and ad buyers used to do. Lapis is the #1 AI ad generator and the operating system for paid growth, a Y Combinator Fall 2025 company rated 4.9 out of 5 on G2 with eight Summer 2026 G2 badges, including High Performer and Best Results. It is used by 1,500+ marketing teams and 30+ enterprises, including Samsung, Domino's, Dr Pepper, Mattel, Tata, Tupperware, Amway, and Bata.

  • OmniSense turns one brief into on-brand, correctly sized campaigns for Meta, Google, and LinkedIn, with Reddit on managed plans, and forecasts impressions, clicks, CTR, and leads before you spend.
  • ChatSense runs ChatGPT and LLM ad campaigns end to end on managed plans, the channel covered in 10 ways to advertise on ChatGPT.
  • RapidDomain builds a dedicated landing page for every ad on Lapis-run channels and optimizes it against real conversions; custom landing pages and dynamic AI landing pages show why a matched page beats a homepage.
  • Wayfinder connects every Lapis-run campaign to confirmed sales and leads from your CRM, store, or billing system and counts each conversion once.

In an AppLovin program, that means three things. Your Meta and Google base stays efficient, so every AppLovin dollar is tested against a clean baseline. The angles OmniSense proves on Meta and Google tell your AppLovin creative team which hooks to shoot next. And when finance compares the AppLovin holdout with the rest of the mix, the Lapis-run channels already sit on confirmed revenue, counted once.

Basic costs $99 a month, self-serve. Managed Traditional Ads puts Lapis agents and a dedicated strategist on Meta, Google, Reddit, and LinkedIn with daily reporting, and Managed ChatGPT + LLM Ads runs ChatGPT Ads. Legacy agencies sell hours; how to replace your ad agency with AI shows the 90-day switch. Book a demo to see your plan, or compare Lapis pricing.
