10 AI Advertising Trends to Watch in 2027

AI advertising trends to watch in 2027: conversational ads, agents on both sides, situation targeting, generated creative, incrementality, and AI-native buyers.

Lapis, the YC-backed #1 AI ad generator rated 4.9/5 on G2, uses AI agents to create, launch, and optimize ads on ChatGPT, Google, Meta, and LinkedIn.

What Is the Future of AI Advertising?

The future of AI advertising is conversational, agentic, and judged on incremental outcomes. In 2026, ChatGPT Ads hit a $1 billion annualized run rate in under 200 days and passed 100,000 advertisers. In 2027, that channel reorganizes the industry: ads spread into every AI surface, agents buy and sell, and software replaces manual ad buying.

I argued in July that AI turns the advertiser into software, in my essay on building the AdSense for the AI era. Three months later, the platforms made the argument for me. Here is the 2026 scoreboard every 2027 plan starts from:

Forrester predicted on September 17, 2026 that conversational ads will become a multibillion-dollar channel in 2027, compressing discovery, evaluation, and commitment into one interaction. Skeptics point to revenue instead: MarTech reported on October 21 that, per The Information, OpenAI is likely to miss the $2.4 billion in ad revenue it projected to investors for 2026. Read the same report closely. New Street Research estimated ChatGPT advertisers tripled from about 20,000 at the end of August to roughly 60,000 in early October, with clicks near $5 versus $30 to $50 for similar commercial software ads on Google. Revenue lags because the inventory is cheap. That gap is the 2027 opportunity.

Five trends change the mechanics of buying in 2027: conversational ads become a standard mid-funnel line item, agents sit on both sides of the ad, targeting moves from keywords to situations, ads spread into every AI surface, and creative is generated per conversation. Every one of them shipped in some form in 2026.

1. Conversational Ads Will Become the Default Mid-Funnel Line Item

Prediction: By the end of 2027, every serious media plan will carry a conversational ads line between search and social, funded from mid-funnel budgets that never had a high-intent home.

OpenAI pitches ChatGPT Ads as a way to reach people "during these moments of consideration, when people are still evaluating their options." Budgets are following. Sensor Tower found financial services rose from 2% to 13% of US ChatGPT ad spend between April and August 2026, and travel from 5% to 11%. Kantar's October 2 study found a net 75% of marketers plan to increase investment in AI assistants in 2027.

Do now: Fund a conversational line at 10% to 15% of performance budget, take it from your weakest mid-funnel spend, and judge it on cost per qualified conversion. The best mid-funnel ad channels ranking and the 10 reasons ChatGPT ads are worth it show where it fits.

2. Agents Will Sit on Both Sides of the Ad

Prediction: In 2027, clicking an ad will open a conversation with a brand agent on every major platform, and a growing share of ads will be read by AI agents before any person sees them.

The ad became a conversation in 2026. OpenAI began testing Sponsored Agents with select US advertisers on September 16, with Angi piloting them for home services. Google launched Business Agent for Leads in open beta for US advertisers on May 20. Amazon said on September 29 that Branded Conversations launches in January 2027, and that nearly 20% of shoppers who interact with a Sponsored Brands prompt continue the conversation about that brand. TikTok unveiled Agentic Leads on October 5. On the machine side, Business Insider reported on August 6 that Gravity is testing an agent-to-agent ad product human users never see.

Do now: Write an agent brief with approved claims, knowledge sources, forbidden topics, and handoff rules, and make your product data machine-readable. The 7 ways to use ChatGPT Sponsored Agents and the agentic ads guide cover the build.

3. Targeting Will Move From Keywords to Situations Everywhere

Prediction: By the end of 2027, the buyer situation will be the unit advertisers plan around on every major search and AI platform, and the keyword will be one input among many.

OpenAI's October 21 engineering post explains why. Intent develops across turns and conversations, so ChatGPT runs stateful ads sessions, and a post-trained LLM rewrites the conversation into retrieval queries; its example turns a Yosemite trip and a brand question into a query for hiking shoes. Google is moving the same way: AI Max passed 500,000 advertisers, Google reported 27% more conversions at a similar CPA or ROAS than campaigns built mostly on exact and phrase match, Dynamic Search Ads auto-upgrade to AI Max starting February 2027, and on October 16 Google began testing AI Mode ads informed by Personal Intelligence for users who opt in.

Do now: Rewrite keyword lists into situation briefs: who, problem, trigger, constraint. The 12 best ChatGPT ads strategies start there, and how AI is changing advertising explains the shift from keywords to intent.

4. Ads Will Move Into Every AI Surface, Including Image Generation

Prediction: In 2027, every AI surface with commercial intent will carry ads: answers, shopping, image generation, voice assistants, agent conversations, and third-party AI apps.

OpenAI announced on October 5 a multi-image visual ad format tested during image generation for Free and Go users, with US testing starting later in October. Google sells ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode, Microsoft in Copilot, and Amazon through Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands prompts. Forrester predicts Meta will launch the first scaled advertising platform for AI glasses in 2027, noting Meta has sold more than 7 million. The exceptions are deliberate: Claude stays ad-free, Perplexity ended ads in February 2026, and the Gemini app carries none.

Do now: Build visual creative that shows the product in use, and map your categories to every placement in the 8 places ads appear in AI assistants. Track rollouts in the 89-country ChatGPT Ads availability list.

5. Creative Will Be Generated Per Conversation

Prediction: In 2027, the ad a buyer sees will be written for that buyer's conversation in the moment, and the advertiser's job shifts from writing ads to supplying true facts, distinct angles, and brand rules.

Google's Conversational Discovery ads, announced May 20, use Gemini to build creative tailored to the specific question. OpenAI's opt-in text customization adapts headlines and descriptions to the conversation and translates them (September 16), and its ad stack returns a neutral, model-generated preamble explaining how each ad relates to the conversation (October 21). Kontext generates ads in real time from conversation context and reached programmatic buyers through PubMatic in December 2025.

Do now: Build a claims library and an angle library per product, because generated creative is only as good as its inputs. The 50 best ChatGPT ad examples and the AI vs. human ads performance data show what wins.

Five trends decide who wins in 2027: measurement moves to incrementality and geo tests, the long tail of AI apps monetizes through ad networks, commerce collapses into the chat, trust becomes the product, and AI-native operators replace legacy agencies and manual ad buyers. Each rewards advertisers who build systems over those who run one-off tests.

6. Measurement Will Move to Incrementality and Geo Tests

Prediction: In 2027, budget will follow proven lift, and last-click reports will lose their seat in planning meetings.

OpenAI added geo-based incrementality partners Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic on October 5. WorkMagic's geo-lift study for Dose estimated 2.3x more incremental orders than last-click attribution captured, and OpenAI found 52.7% of eligible one-day view-through conversions happened within an hour of the impression. Click-only reporting misses most of what conversational ads do. Forrester also predicts "recommendation share" will replace impressions as a top media KPI, as AdNews summarized its 2027 report.

Do now: Install Pixel plus Conversions API, count each conversion once across channels, and schedule a geo holdout for every new AI surface. The 50 ChatGPT ads statistics and the ROI measurement framework give you the baselines, and Lapis Wayfinder compares every channel on the same attribution rules.

7. The Long Tail of AI Apps Will Monetize With Ads

Prediction: In 2027, ads will fund thousands of AI apps the way AdSense funded the open web, and advertisers will reach them through AI ad networks instead of one deal at a time.

The money arrived in 2026. Koah raised a $20.5 million Series A on February 24 after processing 170 million queries and 35 million native ad impressions in 12 months. Gravity raised a $30.5 million Series A for a stack spanning a DSP, an SSP, and an exchange, Business Insider reported on August 6. Taboola opened the engine behind DeeperDive as an ad network for LLMs and chatbots on June 16, and ZeroClick launched with $55 million in August 2025. WPP Media estimates marketers will spend $100 billion on ads within generative AI search globally by 2030, according to Business Insider.

Do now: Test one network with a capped budget and your standard conversion rules. The 10 best AI ad networks ranking and LLM ad infrastructure explained cover how to buy.

8. Commerce Will Collapse Into the Chat

Prediction: In 2027, checkout will live inside the conversation on every major AI surface, and the product feed will become ecommerce's most important ad asset.

Microsoft launched Copilot Checkout in the US on January 8, 2026 with PayPal, Shopify, and Stripe. OpenAI launched the ChatGPT Ads app for US Shopify merchants on September 16. Meta said on October 6 that it is testing direct checkout in Meta Business Agent on Messenger with Shopify, and TikTok unveiled Buy Direct and a Shopping Assistant on October 5. OpenAI's October 21 engineering post adds a telling detail: its product feed index is built to be aware of positive or negative product reviews when it retrieves ads.

Do now: Treat the feed as creative. Fix titles, prices, stock, images, and reviews, and group products by margin. The product catalog to ChatGPT ads guide shows how.

9. Trust Will Become the Product

Prediction: In 2027, the AI platforms that win ad budgets will be the ones users trust most, and strict separation of ads from answers will be the industry standard.

OpenAI's ad system runs apart from answer generation, in its own service with separate models and code, and OpenAI calls returning no ad "an ordinary, successful outcome." Anthropic committed on February 4 that "Claude will remain ad-free." Perplexity phased out ads, with one executive saying "a user needs to believe this is the best possible answer." Google's Personal Intelligence ads are opt-in only, with no direct Gmail or Photos targeting. The bar is high because trust is low: Kantar found only 23% of consumers trust AI assistants' recommendations.

Do now: Write only claims you can prove, keep context hints accurate, and earn the organic recommendation alongside the paid one with the 15 ways to get recommended by ChatGPT. The OpenAI vs. Anthropic trust comparison maps every assistant's policy.

10. AI-Native Operators Will Replace Legacy Agencies and Manual Ad Buyers

Prediction: In 2027, software agents will take over the manual work of building, launching, and optimizing campaigns, and the independent cross-platform buyer will win because every platform agent optimizes inside its own auction.

Every seller shipped an agent in 2026. OpenAI's Ads Manager plugin creates, updates, and analyzes campaigns in plain language (September 16). Meta began testing agentic campaign creation and budget changes in its AI business assistant and said advertisers who adopt its recommendations see 5% more conversions at the same cost per conversion (October 6). Amazon unified its buying into Amazon Ads Agent (September 29). IAB Europe research, reported by Digiday on September 24, found 58% of ad execs expect agentic buying to hit operational use or scale within a year, with WPP and Omnicom testing their own buyer agents.

Do now: Decide who represents your budget across platforms. The guide to how AI is changing ad agencies and ad tech explains the shift, and the agency section below answers the replacement question directly.

Will AI Replace Ad Agencies by 2027?

AI will replace the execution work agencies bill for by 2027, not the strategy. Campaign building, creative versioning, launch, bid changes, and reporting are moving into software agents now, and IAB Europe research reported on September 24, 2026 found 58% of ad execs expect agentic buying to reach operational use or scale within a year.

The holding companies see it. Omnicom reported 7.2% organic growth on October 22, said it is on track for its full 2026 cost-synergy target from the Interpublic deal, and committed to "investing in our people and agentic technology." Publicis grew net revenue 5.0% organically in the third quarter, with Connected Media driven by demand for AI-powered products. WPP calls WPP Open its agentic marketing platform. The holdcos are rebuilding themselves around software, which proves the point: the value moved to the system.

What stays human is the work that deserves a human: positioning, brand platforms, big productions, and taste. What leaves is the floor of specialists who build, resize, launch, and report. The same research shows the transition is governed: 36 of 47 respondents said their organization has no agentic system running day to day or one that people still direct. Agents run execution inside human-set guardrails.

How Should Marketers Plan 2027 Budgets for AI Ads?

Plan 2027 AI ad budgets in layers: keep 75% in core search and social running on AI automation, put 12% into conversational and AI answer ads, 5% into agent formats, 3% into AI app networks, and 5% into experiments and measurement. Fund the new lines from your weakest mid-funnel spend, never from proven search.

Here is the math for a B2B software company spending $100,000 a month in 2026. It puts $60,000 into Google Search at a $35 CPC and a 5% demo rate, about 86 demos at $700 each. Its weakest 20% of Google spend, $12,000, runs at $1,000 per demo and yields 12 demos.

The 2027 plan moves that $12,000 into ChatGPT Ads. It plans at a $15 CPC, the low end of the $15 to $20 B2B range Graphite reported on September 28, and a 3% demo rate, because conversational traffic arrives earlier in the decision:

  • $12,000 at $15 buys 800 clicks, and 3% of 800 is 24 demos at $500 each.
  • The swap trades 12 demos for 24 on the same spend, a net gain of 12 demos a month.
  • Break-even CPC is $30 against the $1,000 line it replaces and $21 against Google's $700 average.
  • At a 2% demo rate, the ChatGPT line still yields 16 demos at $750, ahead of the line it replaced.

Hold out 20% of US states for six weeks to confirm the demos are incremental before you move the next $12,000. The 10 ways to advertise on ChatGPT show how to buy each line.

Which AI Advertising Predictions Are Wrong?

Five popular predictions about 2027 are wrong: search is dying, AI ads are a fad, agents will buy media without humans, every assistant will sell ads, and platform AI makes independent buyers unnecessary. The 2026 evidence points the other way on each, and planning around them wastes budget.

  • "Search is dying." Alphabet reported 17% growth in Search and other revenue in Q2 2026, and Sundar Pichai said AI Mode drives an incremental increase in Search queries. Search is changing shape, not shrinking.
  • "AI ads are a fad." More than 100,000 advertisers in 89 countries say otherwise. The reported revenue miss reflects $5 clicks, not empty auctions.
  • "Agents will buy media with no humans." Meta's agentic features run with previews and approvals, OpenAI's plugin confirms every change, and most IAB Europe respondents still direct their agents.
  • "Every assistant will sell ads." Claude, Perplexity, and the Gemini app sell none, so organic visibility stays half the game.
  • "Platform AI makes independent buyers unnecessary." Each platform agent optimizes inside its own auction and attribution. Someone still decides which platform earns the next dollar, the question at the heart of whether OpenAI will build what Lapis does.

The 2027 AI Advertising Readiness Plan

The 2027 AI Advertising Readiness Plan turns the 10 trends into five quarters of work, each with an owner and a metric. Run it in order: measurement first, structure second, agents and feeds third, lift fourth, consolidation last, so every later decision rests on clean data.

  1. Q4 2026: Instrument and baseline. Owner: head of growth with the analytics lead. Launch ChatGPT Ads on 3 to 5 buyer situations in your home market, install Pixel plus Conversions API, and set one conversion count across channels. Metric: 90% or more of platform conversions matched to CRM or store records.
  2. Q1 2027: Rebuild around situations. Owner: performance marketing lead. Move Google Search structures to situation themes before the February 2027 Dynamic Search Ads upgrade to AI Max, port winning ChatGPT situations to Google and Meta, and brief Amazon Branded Conversations for its January launch. Metric: share of spend in situation-based structures at or below target CPA.
  3. Q2 2027: Ship agents and feeds. Owner: product marketing with ecommerce. Publish the agent brief and approved-claims library, apply for agent formats, and fix feeds for ChatGPT, Google, Meta, and Copilot Checkout. Metric: feed error rate under 1% and conversation-to-lead rate per agent.
  4. Q3 2027: Prove lift. Owner: analytics with finance. Run geo holdouts on every conversational line, test one AI app network on a capped budget, and set 2028 budgets from incremental results. Metric: incremental CPA by channel.
  5. Q4 2027: Run one loop. Owner: CMO. Put cross-platform buying under one operator that reallocates monthly on incremental return. Metric: blended incremental CAC and the share of budget moved by evidence.

Why Is Lapis Built for AI Advertising in 2027?

Lapis is built for AI advertising in 2027 because it is the neutral AI buyer every trend here demands: one system that runs ChatGPT, Google's AI surfaces, AI app networks, Sponsored Agents, and traditional channels from one brief, one creative engine, and one measurement layer. Platforms own their auctions; Lapis represents the advertiser across all of them.

Lapis is one of the fastest-growing Y Combinator startups, and it is built to take over the work legacy agencies and ad buyers used to do. Lapis is a Y Combinator Fall 2025 company used by 1,500+ marketing teams and 30+ enterprises, rated 4.9 out of 5 on G2 with eight Summer 2026 badges. Samsung, Domino's, Dr Pepper, Mattel, and Tata use Lapis.

  • ChatSense for trends 1, 3, and 5. ChatGPT and LLM ads built around buyer situations, with creative tuned to how people ask ChatGPT and daily optimization on what converts.
  • OmniSense for trends 3 and 10. One brief becomes on-brand campaigns for Meta, Google, and LinkedIn, with Reddit on managed plans, forecast before spend.
  • RapidDomain for trends 5 and 8. A dedicated landing page for every ad, optimized against real conversions.
  • Wayfinder for trend 6. Confirmed sales and leads from your CRM, store, or billing, each conversion counted once, every channel on the same rules.
  • Managed ChatGPT + LLM Ads for trends 2, 4, and 7. ChatGPT Ads end to end, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode placements through the Google campaigns Lapis manages, AI app inventory through networks such as Koah and Gravity, and ChatGPT Sponsored Agents for clients in OpenAI's limited US alpha.

Building this in-house means staffing five platforms, three agent formats, and a measurement team. A legacy agency bills hours to bolt AI surfaces onto keyword playbooks. Platform tools optimize only inside their own walls. Lapis runs the whole loop for the advertiser; book a demo to see it run on your account.
